Hi all,

It was good to discover BCF when hunting for tips on how to restart my 1972 MGB roadster. I live in Ashtead, Surrey, 20 miles south of central London, England, where the car is comfortably contained in a heated garage.

Having not started the car for three months due to falling ill, I was disappointed not to be able to start the car this week, particularly given the batteries had been on trickle charge during that period. Following the covid lockdown, when the car was also laid up for extended periods, I had no such problems, so was disappointed this week when my 50 year old decided not to play! So, while I'm now feeling better, my 'B' certainly isn't!!!!

I've got full power to the lights, instruments etc., and the starter relay is making that ticking noise that we only hear when something goes wrong when ignition is engaged, the bonnet is up, and someone else is trying to turn over the engine (Mrs M in this case) while I have my ear listening out for clicks. I had lots of clicks so assuming the relay is OK, I'm presuming that the fault lies further down the line towards the starter motor.

There's lots of thoughts on BCF about common causes for non-starting in such circumstances, but I'd be glad to be directed to any forums or hear first-hand of any further and more obvious causes of such problems. I'm now going, with inexpert hands, to start trying to test, with a multimeter, the relatively new wiring between the relay and the solenoid to see if there's anything obvious causing such issues.

Best wishes all,

John

John, welcome and there are few things more disappointing than building up to your car starting and then it won't.

Probably better to start this conversation in the MG Forum, but,

1. Give the starter a few good raps with a hammer or wrench

2. I bet the battery is dead. If it is just clicking and not turning over I suspect that is the problem.

:iagree: With JPSmit above. Sounds like a bad battery. Don’t overlook the simple stuff. And, welcome to the BCF!

Hi Morjoh, one year older than me mate,
When trying to start do the lights go out, if they do then i too suspect the battery,
If not then try sticking the thing in gear, with ignition off rock the car back and forth, the stater may have mismeshed with the ring gear.
then try starting it again.
OR stick a volt meter on the input side and then output side of the solenoid, when the solenoid engages you should get 12 volts going to the starter. You can also try sticking a spanner across the two large terminals on the solenoid see if that fires the starter up, if it does then solenoid is kaput.

Welcome to the BCF John! Now that you've introduced yourself, you will get much better response if you post any specific technical questions in the MG forum here. Cheers.
