Longtime lurker, finally joined.
I picked up an incredibly rusty 61 TR4 (CT471L)this summer. My wife has now banned me from unsupervised visits to e-bay and craigslist.
I have wanted a LBC to do a v8 conversion, but I am torn on the direction to go with this one.
On one hand, its is a rust bucket! I knew it was rusty when I bought it, but I am amazed at the design characteristics which have encouraged oxidation over the years. I am almost ashamed to post pictures, but I will as time goes on. Also, I have a small block Chevy V-8 and a nice 4.3 V-6 laying about waiting for a project.
On the other hand, the commission number is one of the earliest TR4's I have seen, and what's left of it appears to be original. Does the low commission number make it more collectible, and thus worth restoring? The motor runs, and even idles reasonably well. The clutch and brakes appear to be reasonably intact for a vehicle that has sat since the early eighties by my estimation. The floors are gone (easy fix), the fenders are holy (man the repros are freakin' expensive. I thought repro Camaro stuff was expensive!), but the doors are not too bad...
I am a welder/metal fabricator by trade, so the work required to restore it does not intimidate me.
So, which way should I go?
I have followed the Triumph forum closely since acquiring my new project. You guys are a hoot! Tinster rocks. (empty the trunk, and back away slowly!) and Brosky has the sweetest TR6 I have ever seen. I have learned an incredible amount of info from reading the posts.
I look forward to your feedback.
