heavy smoke on start up - burning oil

Not sure what happened - now I have some heavy smoking on start up. Time for a rebuild? Rings? It is definitely burning oil.

1275 cc engine

No, not rings if it only does it at start-up & goes away while driving....that's oil leaking past the valve seal while the engine sits & burning off when you start the engine.

Is it just on start up? If so, could be something as simple as hardened or cracked valve stem seals.
Oil from the top seeps down the stem and into the cylinder while the car is parked, then burns off in a quick cloud when the car is started up. It's almost undetectable at other times.

HA Tony, great minds think alike... some type faster....

Yeah, and some read th' forum from bottom to top... I third the valve stem posit.

Valve stem seals... Degree of difficulty on replacing these?

+1 (or 4, depending on how you look at it)

Lucus oil treatment will help with this....not as good as repair but it will help. Other don't think it's tastes as good though...at least as not as good as chicken.

They say it's possible to do without pulling the head... But not by me...

You may as well pull the head and do it at the same time.

Get one of those valve spring compressors that just squeeses the spring and one of those adapters for an air chuck so you can pressurize the cylinders and keep the valve up in place while you take the keepers out and remove the spring and seal.

yeah, what he said....

and, if you don't have air (or the adaptor), grab about 20 feet pf 1/4" rope, tie a knot in the bight end, roll the piston for the cylinder in question down, stuff the rope into the cylinder, then roll the piston up.
Hard.
That will hold the valves shut while you remove the keepers and springs for seal replacement......

I would go with rope stuck down the cylinder before doing the compressed air.

Could this be the same problem I have with my MGB? Not at start-up, but just puffs some smoke once in awhile. Not on decelaration, just now and again when driving in traffic. Not at higher speeds.
