Heater valve..

Quick question, and it may seem very obvious, but it's eluding me.
My heater has been by-passed (PO) and I'm not sure which position the heater valve is in from the cable, because, when I turn the knob on the dash, it just keeps on spinning around.
Until I can get either:
The heater fixed and re-routed.
The valve fixed, if it is broken.

Is there an easy way to see the open position of the valve to allow a flow of ccolant?

In is valve off, out is valve on. Turning works the blower motor.
 
Barry, you could always just loosen the hose and check for flow. I'm sure a less messy way is to wait until one of the resident "B" gurus happens along.

It's drained right now Jeff, otherwise that would work, I hadn't considered that.
Jack, I think you're right on, it would make sense that 'out' would be a pulling of the valve away from the hose, thus letting water out. Cheers.

The valve position in the picture shows that it is open now.If the cable is pulled, it will close that valve. I just put this valve on my car, that's how I know. Dave
 
So, if the knob on the dash is sticking out of the dash the valve is closed, really?
 
They're twisty knobs, the one on right is fine, the one on the lower left, that controls temp is just free spinning.
I'm not worried about the knob at all, just what position the valve was in went it decided to spin freely.
It appears that the cable is stuck somewhere, because I can't manipulate it from under the hood.

Think my first trick would be to pull the cable off and clean up the whole think and lub well.
 
I just did Jack, with a pair of wire cutters.
That problem is solved!
As it's drained, I'll take the unit off, have a mooch inside to see if it's open and replace.

The valves have a rubber-like diaphragm as the seal, the valves were hens' teeth a few years back but now seem available again. Diaphragms can rupture and leak. I carry a blanking plate in the "onboard spares." A used sparkplug and a hose clamp work on the other side. I've had that experience on the road and learned.
 
Yeah, if it leaks guess where it drips. Right on the distributor. Not good on the road. A large zip lock bag over the distributor will get you home if not too far away.
