I’ve spent three hours trying to get this cable to work. No matter what I do, the heater control valve moves about 3/8 of an inch forward or backward. I’ve tried loosening the cable clamp nut and sliding the valve one way, and then doing the opposite. I tried adjusting when they came control knob is pulled out and when it’s all the way back in. I can’t figure this out. Is there a trick?

I do not think there is a trick to it. You need to determine if your cable has enough movement to allow the valve to fully open or close. Loosen the cable from the valve and determine how much movement you need to operate the valve. Then operate the cable and see how much movement you have there. I suspect there is something going on with the cable not allowing enough movement to operate the valve. It could be that the exposed cable has been shortened to much. If this is the case you may need to shorten ( cut) the cable housing to expose more of the inner cable. If you need tips on doing that just ask.
