Heater box

I have heard Janel speak of wrestling with this. I have all the bolts removed (I think) but I can't see to wrastle this one out.
Any tips?

Have you gotten thecables to the controls loosened yet? There's one short one you have to remove from the control in the dash/console to pull the heater box out.

So the cables come out with the box?

1 does...the one for the heater control on the engine doesn't.

What's odd is that there is a cable running through the grommit right under the heater box in the engine bay. It is only thing I have found not connected & the only thing I cannot figure out where it goes. I'll look for a pic.

The cable I'm talking about exits the firewall behind the radio console & goes directly to the heater box; but you can't see it on the engine side. You may be seeing the speedo cable as some cars with angle drives had them coming out on the passenger side of the firewall just below where the oil line exits.

Or, it could be the cable going to the heater control valve.

Viping, You might be able to see the cable Tony is talking about by sliding under the passenger side, (fun, fun, fun), and taking off the heater air deflector and looking inside the hole with a flashlight. Not too bad if the right seat is out. As Tony said, the cable does not come through the firewall. It works the heat / defroster flapper on the bottom of the heat box. Also after you get that cable disconnected, the rubber seal between the heat box and the body may be fused to the body from age. Mine was fried! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ

If the 'cable' you're talking about is the one I'm seeing, its the temperature senson...do you have a combo guage?

LoL, must not be important.

That ~should~ be the heater control valve cable:

Yup. Should be a "Rube Goldberg" lookin' thing (see previous photo) there to control hot water flow. You've got "constant flow" of heat without it. They used to be VERY expensive. I even went to the trouble of making a mold for the rubber diaphragms in them years ago.

Shucks another non-original part! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
Let me go check Moss.

Moss 360-410. I gotta see if maybe the midget has the same part. Actaully I remember now. It does not. It's a valve on the block that you turn by hand.
Argh! I need another part now.

For the time being you can route a hose back around to the other tube running down the carb side. No "downtime". I keep a blanking plate and shorter bolts on-board to shunt the port in case the valve develops a leak on a trip, too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I can run fine the way I have it now but i'll be running heat all the time. I'll see how it goes. Least of the worries now. Going out to work on the other caliper rebuild & rotor cleanup.

Did you ever get the heat box out?? Find the cable end?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif PJ

I have been working on the brakes,

but had posted the question so I can get working on it. There is no real reason to take it out but I want to make sure it is in working order and not going to crap out on me. I am going to add new brake & clutch MC lines so I might as well take it out & paint it while I am there.
