Heater box removal

I am new to the forum...I have a 1975 MGB with a leaking heater core. I've pulled all the fasteners from the engine side of the heater box, pulled the console and disconnected the flex tubes for the defroster but still can't get the box out. I can see the heater/defroster cable going into the box were the defroster tubes were attached but cannot see how to disconnect. The heater box is loose but seems to be stuck or attached below where the blower motor was. Any ideas on how to get the box out?

I've not had the pleasure of doing this myself yet but a number of us have. They'll be awake before you know it to lend a hand. Welcome to the BCF by the way.

OK, just got back in from garage...34 degrees today!
Thanks for the welcome vping!
I finally got the heater box out. I had done some searching on this forum last night and seen a photo of a heater box with the sheet metal attachment flange on top of the box all bent up. It got me thinking and I checked. That was holding me up. It was tangled up with the vacuum lines under the lip for the hood (or should I say bonnet? With some pushing and shoving I got things out of the way and pulled the box. The cable was no fun and turns out not working anyway. The rivets attaching it to the door were 'popped. Now I need to find a local shop to fix the core.

Here's a tip: take the hood stay prop loose from the hood....tie a piece of rope around the spring under the hood & pull the hood straight up tying it to the trunk latch or a bumper....that gives you more room to work around things on the firewall.

You might be better off just buying a new core. The cost will be about the same and you'll never have to touch it again. Money spent wisely on our cars goes a long way to prevent further issues and problems a year or two later.

Do your self a favor when installing the rebuilt unit. Attach the control cable to the heater before you install it back in the car. They can be installed later if you desire, but it's not easy working on your back like a contortionist through a 2 1/2 inch hole.

Paul,

Good advice, that's how I did mine. I've heard it before, even on this forum, but it always bears repeating.

...you guys...

Where's yer sense of adventure?!? :smirk:

I've done it dozens of times, the cable attached prior to installing the box is MUCH faster. Not to mention all the swearing and cramping from contorting into the footwell to work thru that silly li'l door. And th' tetanus booster... :madder:

OH!! And WELCOME TO TH' FORUM NCSinCT!!!
