Still working on that 1958 Rambler American.
The bowden cable is bent and slightly corroded, so is way too tight inside the coiled cover sheath. See photo. Takes pliers to slide the cable in and out of the coiled sheath.
We've got a new cable, which moves very easily. Cable is NOS, proper for the car. Switch end of the internal wire has a 3/4" stub with a thread inside the stub, so it must thread onto the end of the control knob stem.
We've unscrewed the cover sheath from the switch collar (see photo), but turning the internal wire shows it's not threaded to anything. It never comes out of the switch - but it's still connected to the control knob stem. I sure don't want to destroy that long collar and/or switch itself, just to separate the wire from the stem.
We've tried unscrewing in *both* directions, but no luck; wire rotates easily even when holding the stem tight. Any ideas on how to remove that internal wire from the control knob stem? So we can thread in the new cable?
