Today as I was driving I was able to detect an abundance of hot air coming from behind the heater assembly. Is there a gasket, or foam sealer that installs behind the heater to the firewall?

At first I thought it might be hot air from the engine compartment at the trans. bulkhead. Then re thought my position. You musta had the butterfly to the heater open for it to push hot air through the heater/ plenum seam. Probably had the fan going as well. You were actually using the heater in a Healey in Southern California! :shocked: --elrey

The heat was coming from behind the heater (or above). I tried the heater settings in a couple of different ways with the same result. Although not entirely safe I did apply pressure to the heater body and it seemed to reduce the output of hot air, I therefore thought it a "leak." I am planning on redoing the interior, including heat insulation, plugging holes and the like. I was just wondering if I need to remove the heater unit and seal behind it?

There is a foam gasket that goes between the heater assembly and the cross tube in the bulkhead that carries heat to the footwell vents. You can see the gasket in the Moss catalog heater drawing, but there is no part number so may not be available from them. If this gasket is missing/damaged it would allow hot air to exit before going to the footwells. You have to remove the entire heater assembly to access this gasket.

Thanks for your insight. I suspected that there must be a seal of some sort back there and I did find mention of it in the Anglo Parts Catalogue (www.angloparts.com) wherein they refer to it as Foam, Heater to Body. Once I wrestle the heater out of there I will give it a think and if necessary fashion something to do the job.
