Healey 3000 distributor drive gear spacer washer, end float!

I'm rebuilding an engine that was re-built by the owner back in the 80's and have a question concerning if there should, or shouldn't be a spacer washer under the distributor drive gear, pt# 021-315.

The spacer was found installed on the drive gear when I dismantled the engine. But now when re-fitted with the distributor housing bolted in to the block with a paper gasket and the three bolts holding in place, the assembly binds up to the point locking the cam and causing the engine not to rotate. When I slacken the bolts everything rotates fine.

On some British engines you have to set end-float by using various shims, is this not the case with this engine?

Thx Johnb

John,
just finished building three BJ8 engines, none of them had washer or spacer. There is a thick spacer on the oil pump drive

I Have observed a copper washer between the dizzy drive fitting and the aluminum dizzy housing probably to eliminate housing wear. However, in all cases the clearance was no more than a few thou. It did not appear that any tolerance fitting was required?
