Healey 100 BN2 Water Pumps

I am getting tired of replacing these 1956 Healey 100 BN2 water pumps. I've lost count. 3 or 4 in 8 years I think. I use a quality antifreeze so they are getting lubrication. Rusty water strip across bottom of bonnet is not good. Last I heard they are all made in India but not sure if true. Where can I buy one that is not from Moss Motors? Thanks Marty

IIRC, one of the Brit parts houses was advertising 'new' pumps a few months ago, but I can't find the email. IIRC, they looked like this one:

Pricey, but changing out pumps gets old pretty quick.

So it sounds like a bad seal, correct? If it's an aftermarket unit, you may be able to get into it and replace the seal. There is a recent thread on the other site with a part number for a new seal. If yours is like that, might be an easy fix.

I thought I read in the forum (or Norm Nock) about the importance of “spinning in” the new pump/seal before installing. I attached the pump to my drill press and spun the shaft at around 5k RPM for 15 minutes. No problem with the pump for many years now. Can’t find a related thread here however. Did you do that?

Thanks Bob. I decided to go with British Parts Northwest water pump. The 30% extra water movement is great idea but my engine runs at 170 when moving and only heats up when stopped for a stop light or two. So I may have to raise stat to 180 I guess. One thing at a time, lol. Thanks again, Marty

AH Spares has an ad in the latest AHCUSA magazine for new pumps, and they appear to be, as John said, the ones BPNW is offering. You might check AHS; sometimes it's cheaper to order from England, esp. when the pound is down against the dollar (which I don't believe is the case currently). Of course, shipping and, especially, US Customs can be a PITA (Customs shakes you down for extra dollars, which UPS collects for them).

Edit: Whatever you do, avoid 'County' brand pumps.

Just this morning I ran across a rebuilder for these pumps in Delaware. He rebuilds the original water pump with a unitized seal and a new impellor, modifying the original casting. Let me know if you're still looking and I'll see about getting his contact info.

Just a heads up for anyone looking at the AH Spares water pump. I questioned them about the threads for the heater return hose nipple on the pump's inlet leg. They are not the same threads as the valve that would originally have been fitted. If you want to keep the original valve you will need to find another solution.
