Headrest removal?

I have a 79 B and am putting those "fitted for MG" seat covers on...BTW, they say they install in minutes, but hours can be measured in minutes, can't they ?

Anyway, one headrest came off reasonably well with a little coaxing, but the other is so dang stubborn I can't make it do anything. Is there a trick to this or should it just slide (and I use the term loosely) off the track or is there some hidden something I'm not seeing. As we speak, it is soaking in a little PB Blaster to help it come off. I did that to the other one after struggling and it just slid right off.

Thanks!

Keep trying...patience is a virtue....rust is sometimes stubborn.

More "coaxing"!

Are you using the right "magic words" when you yank on it?

I always wondered what those were!! Should I grit my teeth as well?

No...gritting of the teeth interferes with proper positioning of the tongue out of the side of the mouth.

Okay, I have still been wrestling with this thing...any tips, tricks, etc.???

Let the penetrating oil work...then more brute force.

Are you reupholstering the complete seat assembly? If so...sacrifice the existing seat cover by cutting it off...then remove the backing foam and fibreboard back. You could then use a little heat to persuade the post out without fear of heat damage....and you'll be able to better visualize what's going on...

These things can be buggers to get out.

See, now I'm getting stupid. Gently tapped the post with a rubber mallet to no avail and then whacked the top of the headrest in disgust. Old vinyl cracks with very little effort :eeek: Good thing I'm going to eventually cover that demon headrest...grrr..

Rick,

This is why I am only doing the seat cover thing! I did put some penetrating oil around the post and now I have to be gone for a bit...good thing. Today, the garage door chain went off the track and I can't fix that and then the washer overflowed due to a slow running drain (thanks goodness it's in my garage). Hmmm...bad things seem to keep happening in the garage today. Feels like the 13th...

I'll be at Scarritt-Bennett tomorrow until sometime after lunch, if you're still wrestling with it and need another set of hands/vocabulary...

Not Friday the 13th but it IS a full moon!! Surround the car with garlic, silver bullets and don't feed it after midnight!! Some Holy Water wouldn't hurt either!! LoL

If you can't get it free, take the hard back of the seat off & you'll see where there are little 'tangs' on either side of the headrest that are caught in the headrest adjustment rail of the seat itself.

Taking the hard backboard off is easy & it doesn't damage the upholstery on it either.

Thanks, Tony. Am going to have a little help from Mickey in a bit and we can hopefully get this dang thing off in a short amount of time...will keep you posted!

Gag!! Mickey R., being the nice man that he is, tried to no avail to wrestle that stupid headrest off...I feel better. Think good thoughts as I move on toward my quest to make the stinkin' seat look better! At least the passenger side looks lovely. Mickey thinks that the headrest is somehow permanently attached to the post via a bolt or a weld job since it refuses to budge in either direction. It's always something...BTW, I'll be going to buy a new garage opener before the weekend is through...

Yeah - that headrest and the seat are one, to be sure! It won't budge, either up or down. Methinks whoever had the car before had the seats recovered (they don't look original), and at the same time "affixed" the headrest post to the seat back.

Sorry I wasn't any more help today...

Mickey

They'll rust in the little tab & almost become one together....lie I said - remove the hard seatback.

Will do, Tony...will give an update once I see what's going on in there.

You are the best, M! You get the gold star for being willing to assist another LBC owner.
