MGB-GT Headliner in a GT

I am going to try to remove the headliner in my 73 B GT. The wiring for the rear light and the sun roof cables need attention. Is there any "tricks" or lookouts I need to know and where can I get some instruction for this? I am going to hijack my wife's digital camera tommorrow and take pictures of my GT and my daughter's Midget (I hope). Any help before I start would be a great help.

If its the original fabric glued to cardboard backing then Carefully pull it out through the rear hatch - expect to break the cardboard backing which isn't available anymore but which an upholstery shop can cut.

Are there screws around the outside, Tony? Or some type of clip setup to hold the headliner in place? It seems to be very stiff and solid, almost like the cloth was attached to a very solid backing.

There are clips which break easily. The surround pieces also break apart easily. So does the headliner.

Because of this, I cut my headliner out without touching the surround pieces. Then a new padded / insulated headliner was glued in place directly to the roof. You can't tell the difference looking at it except that the headliner doesn't sag. But it does keep the car cooler and there is less noise resonating through the roof metal.

Its also up over the interior body panels which are covered in hard plastic (that will also probably crack)...&, yes, it is cloth glued to a hard backing

What I do is order the cloth from Moss...when it gets here I lay it out to allow it to smooth & get Jerri to steam it...then I have my buddy who owns an upholstery shop to cut me a new piece of backing board & glue the material tothe top & slide it in from the rear.

Tony

I'm going to post pictures because I have a sun roof that slides btween the upholstery and the roof. I can't glue a new one to the roof because of this. I'll just do the MG thing and go slooow and use no force.

Yep. show us some photos before you remove headliner...you might not have the original one bacause a sunrof wouldn't fit between it & roof.

How do I put several pictures on one post? Hopefully it is easy. Then I can post the pictures of the sun roof top and bottom.

WHOA!! That's completely custom...all bets are off now...you're in for an adventure...keep a photo journal!

The front of the headliner appears to be mounted on a very solid foundation. I can't find any screws or fasteners except for a nut under a covered plug (?). It appears that the headliner at that point is about 2" thick. I can wiggle the framing for the sunroof a little. Any help on where to look to remove the headline would be appreciated. I'm trying to get to the cables for the sunroof to replace them.

I've never seen a sunroof like that in a GT.

The Webasto fabric "bunch up" type was a dealer option (I think), but I've never seen an electric roof in a GT. Have fun with that one!

Headliner is on hold. I pushed in on the clutch and felt like I stepped on a ripe tomatoe. I had my son push in the clutch while I look under the car and saw the slave push out, hold for 10 seconds or so, and then slowly retract. I'll send you a PM Tony on rebuild kits.
