HEADLIGHTS ON ALL THE TIME

1979 MGB WAKING UP AFTER 17 YEARS. I PUT A BATTERY IN THE CAR AND IT WAS DEAD THE NEXT DAY. THEN I REALIZED THE LIGHTS WERE ON ALL THE TIME.
I HAVE TRIED ALL 3 POSITIONS AND THEY DONT GO OUT. IS THE SWITCH BAD, OR IS THERE A RELAY STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION SOME WHERE. I DON'T HAVE AN OWNERS MANUAL, AND THE CAR IS NEW TO ME. I COULDN'T EVEN FIND THE LIGHT SWITCH AT FIRST. UNDER THE STEERING COLUNM? ANY IDEAS AS TO WHAT COULD BE WRONG.
THANKS FOR ALL REPLIES IN ADVANCE.

According to my wiring diagram, there is no light switch relay on that car. This leads me to believe the problem is the switch itself. This is exactly what happened to my own car (77 MGB). If you follow the wiring down the column, just at the dash you will find a connector with a red/green wire, a blue wire and a brown wire in it. This is the headlight wire connector, and if you disconnect it and the lights go out your switch is bad. Hope this helps. P.S. you don't have to remove any parts to do this Dave

Another possibility is that the PO wired the (possibly bad)switch closed and has installed another switch. Might be under the dash. Mine was in plain sight, however.

Re: HEADLIGHTS ON ALL THE TIME and MORE

OK, I will check it out soon and post what happened.
I needed tires (mine were at least 17 years old) and rims (my roystyle rims very rusty). so i posted on Craigslist and got a phone call from someone in Gilroy offering me 4 rims and tires that he just took off his 77 MGB. He had just bought some today from Costco. Such a deal, he gave them to me for free!!!!!!!!!
He is a true MGB Gentleman.
MGB owners are a very classy bunch of people.

Re: HEADLIGHTS ON ALL THE TIME and MORE

That's the best price of all. And all LBC owners are classy folks.

Re: HEADLIGHTS ON ALL THE TIME and MORE

That's interesting about the guy in Gilroy. I've also seen and chatted with a few LBC folks here in Monterey.

With this particular electronic community being so active, it's easy to forget that probably the large majority of MG owners aren't hooked into these discussions. It's great to see the spirit is still so strong.
