Headlight recommendations

I need to replace my current 7" sealed-beam headlights within the next few days prior to leaving for Conclave and would appreciate any recommendations.

1. Is there much effective difference between sealed beam and halogen?

2. If so, on page A-14 of the curent Moss catalogue there are two different 7" Halogen lights--Hellas for $40 each and a pair of Wipacs for $108. And while both of the above use an H4 builb the bulb for the Wipacs is more than twice than that for the Hellas.

Also, I have a set of Lucas PL700 Tribars that I took off the car a few years back because the reflectors were badly corroded--can the reflectors be resilvered?

You can get sealed beam halogens (7" standard replacements) at Wal-Mart; unless you just want to spend more money /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I used them in all my MGBs and the Healey. If I was going to buy some high-dollar, I think I'd get the "LeMans" headlights (especially if I had a Hundred).

Thanks Randy--I'll buy the cheap sealed Halogens.

I'd buy a pair of flat lense Hella E-code headlamps. They should have E-1 or E-4 under the Hella marking in the lamp. These lamps are european spec and have better optics and more lumen output than the standard DOT Hella lights. The price in the moss catalogue would be for one lamp.

They can be found used on eBay for $30-60 a pair. Well worth it in my opinion. New they are around $85 a pair with bulbs.

Hi Michael, yes the reflectors can be resilvered check around on the web or look in Hemmings I do not know of a good vendor though.---Keoke

Sealed beam halogens provide very good light compared to the older technology. This is especially true when you have an alternator. As much as you drive I would say go for the functionality rather than day time showability. I seldom checkout headlights closley when I oogle a car.

"I have a set of Lucas Sealed beams"-If they say left hand traffic at the bottom John, then they FAKES.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I went to WalMart today and the clerk in the auto department told me "We don't carry no round headlights". Sure enough everything on the shelves was rectangular. I went to the nearby NAPA store and purchased two Wagner 7" sealed-beam halogen lights for less than $40 and installed and aligned them. They appear to be as bright as the holed Autopal halogen lights (with H4 bulbs) that they replaced.

Thanks all for the recommendations. On to Conclave....
