The recreated Lincoln hearse.A guy I know (Blue Ox Millworks) built it,
with the help of Military Veterans. There is only ONE photograph of the
original,so it took a lot of thinking to do it.Abraham Hearse

To go along with that there's one or two surviving photos of Lincoln laid out on the bier in DC I believe. The Sec of War at the time had the local photo shops searched I read and photos confiscated not wanting the public to see it. These were apparently in one photographer's personal files and got missed. Saw them online once, don't recall the site.

I was referring to the hearse.
Yes, and Mike was referring to obscure photographs pertaining to Lincoln and his demise. If you do get to see it, take pix and post some.

Understandable that some images were missed. Even with wet plate photography there were a lot of people with the ability to use a camera. And a lot of them were able to get into the Capitol at the time.

As for obscure photos and where found, somewhere in my pile of images are negs of the Edmund Fitzgerald at port in Ashtabula Harbor, circa 1967.

I'd never heard of those Lincoln photos. Here's an interesting story:

and a photo:

Yea, Sec of War Stanton apparently sent the army to all the photographer's in the Washington area with orders to go through everything they could find and confiscate all photos found. And then barred photos as the funeral train made it's way to the burial site. He decided history should not see Lincoln in death. But it is part of the story and showing why the hearse, even a replica, is important to our collective memory.

We're planning on going to the New River Gorge in WV.
It has the highest bridge in WV.

Back in 2008 or so, Mrs JP, darling daughter and I were returning from a trip to Florida when we decided to stop at New River Gorge for a bathroom break. Was parking the car and someone backed into me in the parking lot. Mrs JP and DD head for the bathroom and a park ranger (also an officer of the peace) comes to sort it all out. He takes my ID as well as the other fellow, moves away a bit and slowly it dawns on me that I have about 8 rangers in a circle around me all with hands on holsters. Park ranger comes over and explains that running my ID through the computer gets a hit of a guy, also Canadian, who has used my name as an alias. But, says he, you have cooperated so far so we won't put you in handcuffs. Two hours later after they searched the car they further discover that the fellow wanted has many tattoos (I have none) so away we went. The other fellow and his girlfriend got to spend the same two hours, in their truck none the wiser at all. And when I got home went to the police station and asked but, there was no record this side of the border. One day we might stop at the New River Gorge to actually look at the gorge. Maybe. :ROFLMAO:

Oh and when Mrs JP and DD got back from the bathroom the ranger told her to go into the circle to talk to me - I would explain. I did, and she burst out laughing. If that's not love....

PS when you drive through Summersville do the speed limit exactly. It is a notorious speed trap - don't ask me how I know.

Oh trust me we could laugh at it pretty quickly - particularly in the 'boy am I ever happy I got those tattoos removed' sense of the story :ROFLMAO:

Hmmmm….. How do we know this is the real JP? Could be that you’re the fugitive.
We could have an identity crisis here
