header question

While driving my TR6 around this last weekend the engine noise started to get louder then normal. Well after looking around I found out that the 2 part header has came apart in the middle by maybe 1/8 of an inch. Does this happen alot? Do I need to just tighten the 4 bolts up and maybe put some locktight on them so this doesn't happen again? Any advice out there? stock header btw Thanks

Eric,
Those aren't bolts, they should be studs. Did the studs back out or did the nuts unscrew? Locktite will do you no good as the heat generated in this area will burn up the locktite. If the studs are still into the head completely, and the nuts came off, you might consider just converting to all-metal lock-nuts with new lock washers. If you were getting a lot of heat out of the header over a period of time, you may well want to change out your intake/exhaust gasket. If you go this far, may as well place new studs as well. I think these are all 3/8" NSF fine thread. Good luck. Beware that you should use the proper studs, usually only available (or easily available) from most LBC vendors. I get all my stuff like that from TRF. I don't think that ARP Racing has those particular studs or at least they said they didn't when I tried to buy from them.

I didn't know they were studs. If they are studs then the backed out some. are they suppose to be inserted going up?

Eric,
I think we are on a different page. You seem to be saying that the bottom of your exhaust "header" has come undone, correct? Is this the stock cast iron split header? If so, these are still studs, or should be anyway. (no way to get bolts to go in there) Did the nuts just back off. Then just retighten, still no locktite. Should use brass nuts if you can, steel will work. Use new lock washers. The gasket is metallic and won't need to be changed. Must be a 73 or later TR6. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm looking at the diagram in the Vic British catalog. The part that has came apart on my car is where the header connects with the down pipe. In this pictures there is a exhaust flange, stud-flange, locking washer, and nut-brass-flange. Do I need to replace all these pieces and be back on the road again? My car is a 73 and its stock and has the twin down pipes. thanks

Eric;....Go to WalMart get some 'JBWELD'& fill the leaks that'll fix-it. In the meantime that will give you some breathing room, for a more permanent fix.STUFF REALLY WORKS!
If its not fixed quickly the vibration will make it worse.GOOD LUCK..from the NORTH SHORE. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grouphug.gif

stock header whatever its made out of so probably cast iron. Is this a good enough excuse to go ahead and rebuild the whole engine?
