Header Problem...

I am in the process of installing my Falcon stainless headers in my TR6 and have discovered that they won't fit with my gear-reduction starter! This forum won't allow me to say what I said in my garage so I'll just say, darn...
I guess I will have to go back to a Lucas starter (double darn). I will call Dave at TRF and get the lowdown. Anyway, I will be selling a really nice gear-reduction starter at half-price if this is indeed what I have to do. Ya'll let me know.
Then, to complicate matter, pulled my battery out and discovered that the aftermarket (Triumph didn't have these) plastic battery box had a nice crack in it. You guessed it, ate a hole in the battery shelf. Triple darn. Guess I have body work to do now while I wait to locate a new/rebuilt Lucas starter. Life is never simple. It is a good thing that I love my car.

Bill

Addition to post: I wonder if I could flip the starter so that the motor is up instead of down. I looked at the pic of Moss's gear reduction and it looks like the motor is on top. But my electrical connections are on top, so if indeed it can be inverted, just have to extend the wires. So P....D of right now I can't think straight....

Bill, I would first check with Falcon, they may have sent you headers for the GT6 or a late model TR6. I'm really surprised it didn't fit with the gear reduction starter. Wayne

Yes I thnk that you can rotate the gear reduction starters, at least on my TR4A you can. There should be several holes drilled around the adaptor plate on the front end of the starter that allow repositioning for things like header clearance. Good luck. Peter

Bill, both reduction starters I have are set up just like the one Peter describes. I had to re-index the one on the Spitfire to clear the steering shaft. The starter doesn't care how it's positioned.

Thanks guys,
Indeed, the gear-reduction starter is adjustable. I actually ended up turning it 180 degrees where it would clear everthing, although not by much. Had to lengthen the battery wire and the other wire because now my connections on the starter are on the bottom. May look to see if there is a some kind of heatproof sock to cover the starter and protect the wires. Would Pegasus have anything like this?
Too, I had to grind the flanges on the header to clear the GoodParts triple intake. I don't think independant manufactures communicate very much. Getting the nuts to go onto the studs will require some clever fingerwork, but it will go. An aside: in removing my intake and cast manifold, see where the gasket beneath was full of leaks. Was a non-metallic variety that a vendor swore was the best. Baloney. TRF sent me a good gasket that should seal well. Question: is there any kind of gasket sealer that would work with this new gasket that would enhance the seal? Really don't want any more blowby or leaky intake.
Now I have to start repairing the mess where the battery tray screwed me. Anyone use an Optima gel battery. So many questions, so little time.....

Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm using an Optima battery, although not in my Triumph. It's in my Land Rover. It's an excellent battery and well sealed. It's about 5 years old now, and never a problem. But, it's very heavy, probably 50% heavier than a standard Group 24.

I'm not planning to use an Optima in my TR4. I'd like to get one of those small, sealed racing batteries, but they seem to be two or three times the price of an Optima, which is about twice the price of a standard battery.
