Header install?

Hey all,
(And Dr. Healey, I mean Keoke!)

I received my jet coated header back and now my local British guru is working on the proper install. I wonder if anybody here ias any experience with this? It seems the header is a different size than my SS exhause and the muffler inlet. Kinda looking at different options today, cutting ss exhaust, using an adapter, clamps vs welding SS?

Just looking for ideas.

PS, I will be taking the car in July up to Road America for the Brian Redman races, hope to see some other Healey guys there.
 
Some. My headers have flanges, so I welded a set of mating flanges to the angled intermediate pipes between the headers and mufflers (Smitty's glasspacks). My vote is to weld them, clamps will just cause you trouble down the road.

What about the asprin that I bought? Save that for finding the electrical fault on the gauge lights?

Isn't welding SS a real pain?

Yes & no; you have to work "quick" because stainless doesn't dissipate heat like mild steel does, it stays right in the area being welded. You can quickly burn through.

I've actually had pretty good results using a MIG welder (ER70S mild steel wire) on stainless. Amazingly enough, the (mild steel) bead even remained polished looking years later (result of being diluted with the stainless?). For an exhaust system, I'd MIG it.

Naturally, if you have the skills, TIG would be the preferred method; I'm still working on that...

There's stainless wire available for MIG machines too, but I haven't tried any since graduating to a decent machine. I tried some years ago, but my then Silver Beauty (70A) machine couldn't even melt it. I think I'll get another spool and try it with the Miller 175.
 
Hi Velo,
I’m not sure what diameters you need to transition from and to, but Burns Stainless may have what you need. Match the small end of the transition with your muffler pipes and you may have to cut the big end down to fit the headers.

Yes of course.

Take one before you start lookin for the electrical fault.

Should you find it before the asprin's effects wear off discard the remainder of the bottle Cuz they be contaminated.
