Seriously, when I rebuilt my TR4 engine a couple of years ago, I sprayed the manifold with some aluminum high heat ceramic paint I bought at Autozone. It claims to be good up to 1200 degrees, and seems to be holding up well (after roughly 5,000 miles).
 
I've always had excellent results using the ceramic coatings, ie Jet Hot, or HPC. They are able to be applied to the inner surfaces as well.

Just had the Seven done with HPC. I need a few more drives to be sure but it sure feels like the cockpit footwell is not as hot. Color choices also. I used the silver or gray color.

Bruce, the header and through tunnel exhaust on the race Spridget was coated by HPC, and I swear by the product. With the exhaust in such close proximity to the trans, and running through the tunnel, it would be unbearable without the coating,not to mention the extra heat that would be pumped into the tranny.

I bought the stuff from Eastwood catalog. It was $20 and has worked flawlessly on the manifolds of my big block Corvette.
 
JetHot is expensive, I think that I paid around $120 for my 4A but, here's the thing. Not only does it reduce the temperature of the header and thus the engine compartment but, if you send them a new header, they guarantee it against rust out for life. Seems worth the extra $$ to me. I decided against a SS header and bought mild steel and then sent it out to JetHot for the combined cost of the SS header alone. But that's my take, not yours. Even if yours is not new, they blast it clean inside and out before coating it. The coating is silver and very chrome like. Like any coating, the smoother it goes in, the better it looks so it pays to spend a little time cleaning it up before sending yours. nfi, just a satisfied 2x customer.

i paid about $250 to coat my headers on my v8 from a shop in portland. they were very quick, other colors are available (white, silver, blue); but not green (no longer available) so i went with black.
