Head torquing

I've got 125 miles on the new head gasket. It should now be re-torqued. I've been told to loosen the nuts and re-torque. I've also been told it is only necessary to re-torue with out loosening the nut cause they only get loose and not tight. I plan to do this tomorrow. I've always loosened then re- tighten. Any thoughts?
