What do you suppose is the temp at the head, specifically at the intake manifold gasket? I have a gasket and was considering using a sealer, but the only one I can find that will resist gasoline is limited to 400F. Any thoughts?
 
The proper gasket should not require sealer. Is the intake flange damaged?
 
It's a weber conversion and I've been having a lot of trouble keeping the intake manifold from leaking and causing lots of problems. I'm hearing it's a somewhat common problem, and thought I might try to tackle it with a little sealer along with the normal gasket to help with a less than ideal connection. I like the simplicity of the Weber, but I'd like to go back to the originals. I like my cars original! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
I have had good luck with using 2 intake gaskets when I had the same trouble with my Weber.
I have since had the head and intake side decked, apparently my intake side of the head was warped just enough to blow the gaskets. Once decked, the same gasket has been on it for a few years now and I have removed the manifolds more than once and reused that same gasket.
 
Fiquire even in a street car, combustion chamber and exhaust port temps can reach 1000 degress pretty easy.
On the race cars, where we are taking EGT readings 6" downstream in the headers we are tuning to the 1200-1300 degree range.
 
Even so Hap, the actual cylinder head temp at the mating surface should get no where near that hot. I'll have some readings later today.

Here are the readings I just took with a contact themocouple, rather than infrared.
1275, at operating temp, idling after a 10 mile drive.
All temps in Fahrenheit, surface temps only.

Top of head at thermostat housing: 163.1*
#2 stud at intake/exhaust manifold: 186.3*
Exterior of exhaust manifold: Front: 289.0*
Center: 290.1*
Rear: 287.0*
Intake Manifold flanges: Front: 163.2*
Rear: 167.4*
Head at rear exhaust manifold mating flange: 220.8*
Head at #3 plug: 158.8*

Wow! Thats not too bad at all. I would have guessed a lot hotter than that. Thanks for doing that- that info will help a bunch. I'll install the intake manifold with the 400* limit stuff and I think it will work fine. I was concerned that if there were 500*+ temps I would end up with a gooey mess inside the manifold. I guess I still might, but I'll give it a shot and let you guys know how it works out.
