Head Gasket Job

I realize that changing a head gasket on a BJ8 is time consuming, especially with the removal of the carbs and manifold, but can anybody give me an idea of how long this job should take. I am hoping to get it done over a weekend. Is that pure fantasy?

You can get it done in a day. There will be a lot of argument on this second part, but I use copper spray on my head gaskets. I never had one leak that way. I had a high compression head on the car at first. It had compression numbers of 245lbs per cylinder and no leaks! Lots of power too but very expensive due to the high octane needed for the engine. When you get everything diconected, you might have to break the head free by turning the engine over a few times or hook a chain to the valve covers and put a piece of wood that will extend to both sides of the car. With a friend, you can lift it off without hurting your back.

Hi Shorn. I think you can replace the head gasket over the week end.My position on this is to dismantle as little as possible. Remove only the air cleaners from the carbs.Remove the Manifold intact don't even unbutton the choke cables and place on the left fender with shipping pads for protection.Remove exhaust manifold intact also. if you have working flex joints installed at the ends of the down pipes. and tie the manifold backout of the way.The head is now free to be removed. I see no reason to put any type sealer on the headgasket for a stock engine replacement.---FWIW---Keoke

That Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket adhesive works wonders.
