If its a Mk III Sprite ('64-'66), the correct engine number should start with: 10CC-DA (& then the number)

If its a MkIV Sprite ('66-'74), the correct engine number should start with: 12CC-DA (& then the number)

Also in addition this car has already cut me up on my ring finger, a nice big slash from that sharp thing where the top attaches. So we are technically blood brothers now and I owe it to my BB to get him feeling better.

Rach,
1st let me say it's nice to know that there are other women out there who love to work on their cars...I seem to be in the minority around here.
Now, I bought my MG on e-bay too. It supposedly ran, but the DPO had really done a job on it. I thought I would drive it and fix it too, but it took me a year and several engine pulls (4 to be exact) before I bowed to the wisdom of the local LBC gurus. I actually bough a rebuilt (HA-HA) 1500 motor on e-bay to replace the toasted motor that came with the car. Turns out that guy was as big an idiot as the one I bought the car from.
I was told several times, once you drive it you'll forget the pain you suffered and you know they were right. I have been driving it for about a month now and since getting it going, its been an unbelievable experience (Particularly since I've always driven 4WD trucks and Suburbans)
It can be done. What is it worth? I know my rebuild cost about the same as I paid for the car. I have once again that much in parts (starter, radiator etc.)
Just hang in there. I kept having to tell myself over and over "this is a hobby...I am having fun" (as I bandaged up another bloody finger.
BTW I have a head, rocker and push rods from a 1500 if you want them (you would need to buy lifters and have it checked but its free you want it. Let me know.
Keep your head up and keep hanging in there, like childbirth...its not much fun, but its all worth it!!
T:smile:

My apologies - I trust all LBC owners! hehehehe

Tough question.

Oooh!

Sounds like you feel someone stepped on your toes. NO WAY!

You are not a large complex of unpersonal phone answerers sending scribbled notes to some guy on a scooter to pull boxes of shelves in darkened warehouses. (At least not from what I read of your exploits on these forums)..

Big difference from someone who posts frequently, helps by offering personal experiences and opinions and guides to fix problems, than full time disconnected parts peddlers.

And in case anyone thinks TRF does not fit that last one. Sorry, My experience with them over the last two decades differes. Ignition rotors that destroy Lucas caps, made in Taiwan window regulators tapped for metric capscrews(without any notification of need for metric fasteners) when notified them of problems, was met with a very uncooperative phone answerer. They do make a very illustrative parts manual, though.

Hi Terri! I am glad I am not the only one that does things like this. Also good to hear of another lady involved. I appreciate your offer on the parts, that is very kind of you. I am so impressed at how nice and genuine everyone is that I have met in this hobby.

As for an update on my car, it is in pieces all over the garage. Heater has been removed and the whole top of the engine is out. Met a guy at the British car club of Cincinnati meet last week. Did some talking to him, he says that I can autocross my Sprite. I almost fainted, I would love to get into autocrossing again, never thought I could with the Sprite. He has a 1275 available and thinks that a swap with this motor would be a good idea. I am starting to think the same, you know put the labor into the 948 and still have the 948 when I am done or do it to the 1275 and have a faster motor and begin to start modifying suspension bits so I can be comptetive in autocrossing. This guy's name is Ron Bernert and he owns a shop here that specializes in working on Italian and British cars, we have a tech session coming up this Sat. so I will talk more with him then. Seems like a good idea to me anyways.

Many people swap to the 1275. It's a stronger, faster engine. (but I might slammed for that comment) It turns the car from an econo-sports-car into a modern speed car. Look at the current thread about 5 speed gearboxes.

Be sure that you still have the (original type) "ribcase" or "waffelcase" transmission. The 948 unit was a "smoothcase" and is not strong enough... even for the 948. It may, or may not have been changed when the engine was installed.

I would like to have a 1275 for my car, but the availability of them is drying up making them especially hard to find here. So I'm using the 1098, which is really just a slightly overbored and stroked 948.

I suggested that 1275 conversion a while ago when the discussion was about how odd it was that your car had the 948! You can't go wrong, and except for the purist, none can tell the difference anyway since they are quite close in appearance! (..."(but I might slammed for that comment)"...And yes, some will slam you for saying so, but not I!) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

If I had a 1275 it would be in Miss Agatha.
