Harold Blows

The fine weather today meant Harold got some attention. First off was a re-bleed of the brakes. They ended up nice and firm, but only a test drive will tell.

Then I tried out my carburetor synchronizer tool, with mixed success. The trouble was, that every time I applied the tool to a carb, the engine speed would slow down, due to the restricted air flow on that carb caused by the tool being in place. I'd take a measurement, remove it, let the engine come back up to revs, the apply it to the other carb, and check for the same reading. I think I got them close in the end, but it was a bit hit and miss.

Next I attached Harold's new choke cable. I've decided that I'll leave the air filters off the carbs for a while, until I've finished setting up the idle speed etc., so I had to find a couple of bolts to attach the choke cable U support.

Then I inspected Harold's heater blower. The trouble here is that the control that directs the air will only move as far as the "Interior" position, and no further. It's as if the cable is snagged or something.

There is a chronic mystery with Harold's windscreen washer pump. It seems to work, but it doesn't suck any water out of the bottle. Most perplexing.

My new interior carpet kit arrived: I paid $49 for it on Ebay, and it came in a HUGE box. There are at least twenty pieces of carpet in there, and it's going to take some time to figure out what goes where. Also there is a bag of little round things which I believe are used for securing the carpet, but I need to do some Googling. In preparation for fitting the carpet, I removed the remnants of the rubber coverings currently on the interior sills.

I then returned to the hatch back, where I have been messing about with a Bondo repair that is taking an awful lot of effort to get looking right. I seem to have been sanding it and priming it, and filling it, and sanding it, etc. for months!

Finally I paid a visit to "Hub Cap Annie" in Pasadena, in search of some used hub caps for Harold's Riken BBS/Basketweave wheels. Although the guy had a box full of likely looking caps, none of them were the right diameter for the Rikens (3"). The ones that Moss sells are too small. So I'm beginning to wonder whether I'll find anything to fit.

Have you ascertained whether the impeller is attached to the shaft or not? If it pumped fluid with a bench test, it's attached (and I seem to recall you said it did push fluid with this test) and not when in situ, it will likely be "suckin' air" due to a cracked supply tube or a poor seal at a connector.

Has to be an air leak if the pump tests good. Just take apart each connection from the pump on and test each one.

Julian,
I am also in the middle of replacing the carpet in my B.

I have "some" documentation that may help explain where some if the "little round things" are used.

it is mostly confusing, and i have only figured out where 18 of the 20 pieces go.

Great deal on the $49!

Re: windshield washer pump
Is it wire backwards? The first time I hooked up a new one I had it bass akwards.

Ha! I'd thought of that, so I tried it boths ways around. Now I'm wondering if I need to "wet" the pump internals before trying.

Hi Rob: yes, I saw your photos in the other thread. I'm interested to see how you manage the round thingies, and it's great timing that you are tackling this before I have to /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
