The red flag use is very much a safety tool.
Whilst each car is racing against the clock, at some venues the timing mechanism and track length can allow multiple cars on track at the same time with a suitable start separation.
A car can go off track or spin or have a mechanical issue which could delay the following car(s).
In this case all the cars will be red flagged and the cause vehicle won’t get a re-run but the others will as it’s not their “fault”.
On this occasion it was a marginal call as to whether I’d actually catch the white tr4 and I don’t know if he was ultra cautious or had had an issue. But the marshals have to make an instant safety call in real time and we all appreciate that to err on the side of safety is very welcomed.
