Just visited the guys over at Revington TR in England, and am thinking of purchasing a hardtop/surrey top set up from them. They quoted me about £1500 (a little under that), plus shipping which I thought was fairly reasonable.

The targa frame/rear frame is fabricated in fiberglass (I saw it, and it is very good), and the hard top cap is available in fiberglass or aluminum.

The nice thing is that this is essentially a complete setup. It does not come painted, or assembled. Not a problem, I can get it painted and the glass mounted. All very good quality and it was nice to meet the owner of the place.

Is anyone else offering a complete hardtop set up? I suppose the original thing would be better but who knows if I'll find that.

*Note that I will not be purchasing Revington's kit that has the rollbar integrated, I want the original style one*

Is the window glass or plastic? If glass is it an exact replica of the original glass? I don't need a window but I'll guess there are folks out there who could use an original glass window.

Is the hardtop the 2 piece style or a single aluminum piece?

The window is not glass, it is plastic. That's the short answer.

However, they were very emphatic about the quality of the rear window. They said it is not a standard plexiglass because plexiglass tends to scratch very easily. They named a material (maybe it was Lexan) and said that it was better. I saw one of their race cars and he said he's had it installed for a few years, it was still in great shape.

I was really impressed with the quality of the fiberglass frame, by the way.

If my memory serves me right, the hardtop section was a single aluminum piece, or, a single fiberglass piece. Both kinds were offered to me for sale.
 
I spent a lot of cash getting my aluminum hard top repaired. When I bought the assembly the top looked like someone had used it for a sled at some point. It had bends all over it. At some time I wrote to Revington about using one of their hardtops with an original backlite and I seem to recall they said I could not use their's as a replacement. It's been a while since I had the discussion with them. I was too far into the repair of my system so I had mine finished. Had I not had so much invested I'd have purchased the Revington repro. Those guys are top notch in my opinion.

After my aluminum top was finished I had several pieces of rubber sound deadening applied to the underside before the headliner was installed. It's the same stuff as the body shops use and can be seen in the trunks of many cars. Comes in 1 foot squares, about 1/4 thick and with an adhesive on one side. I'm hoping that will give some rigidity to the aluminum and prevent future denting to occur. I was going to fiberglass the inside to add strength but was told the heat created by the fiberglass curing would likely warp the top. I thought that was good advice and it was given by two people who knew what they were talking about. In the end it turned out very nice........I have not added up the cost and don't think I will.

The original factory version of the backlight was alloy, never fiberglass. I have heard good things about the Revington kit - if I were to buy it though, I'd probably opt for the hardtop cap in fiberglass as well.

The originals are rare, but do come up. For the price you are considering, they are within your reach potentially if you can wait for one to show up. For example:

All sounds good. Just confirming what I thought already.

I will probably get the fiberglass hardtop cap. Don't really want to spend the money for the aluminum, it's not something I'll really use too often.

The Honeybourne kit is interesting...It's significantly cheaper. But it seems that they are only offering the frame and the hardtop cap - no soft convertible targa. Maybe I'll email them just for comparison purposes.

A few months ago, Honeybourne confirmed that the fiberglass center section will fit the original backlight. I am going with them when it is time.

You should e-mail them about fitting the Surrey section to their complete assembly.

Also, when you were at Revington, did you see the Backlight with the integrated rollbar...any pics would be great.

Decided to do the Revington kit. I felt that it was a far more complete kit and I enjoyed meeting the owners of the company. I did not even receive a response from Honeybourne Mouldings, so even if I wanted to get it from them, I couldn't've.

I've got the top bug now
found a rear portion
TRF stock all the remaining less the Flexiglass
from Reveington
never thought I would have this addition
now thinking I should go with Black on the rear window frame
car is Jasmine
Ugg this got expensive FASTTTTTTTTTTTTT
 
It's NOT a cheap decision...but at the end of the day it's a sweet one.

awaiting the glass, the soft top should be in
later in the week

question is what have others done to finish the inside of the of the upright portion of the rear frame and what are some other pitfalls

I have received everything, as of about 10 days ago, from Revington TR. They also have sent me the finisher It is of excellent quality. I have painted the frame and the cap.

All-in, with shipping to my door, it cost me basically £2000 = $3200. Not a cheap choice, definitely not. It was $300 to have it painted, and it will be my time to install it.

So basically it is a $3500 decision.

Personally I feel that it's worth every penny because my car will be *exactly* the car I always wanted, but it's not a "necessary" decision. I could have continued on with my soft top just fine.

I can post pictures of the parts if you would like!
