it occurred to me this morning that the hardtop on my 59 bn6 could be removed by two thieves in a matter of a minute or less. do any of you guys with hardtops take any precautions to make it difficult to remove? i drive my healey almost daily and it is not always in view. any suggestions are appreciated.

To get mine to sit down properly, I have to have a hex nut under the wing nuts on the J-hooks. They would need a wrench to take it off. Other than that, nothing.

After being stationed in Hawaii and being told to never lock a convertible (I had a TR4A at the time) I learned never to leave anything in the passenger compartment.
 
i dont know rick...a top is 5000 to 7000 and a very discriminating crook might just know that. and, a top would not likely be traceable or recognizable. now if the car was to be loaded into a container and shipped abroad might be a different story. but you could be correct.
 
Actually, a crook that is that discriminating would probably take the whole car and part it out at their leisure.
 
The other thing to consider is if the top is locked / theft proofed and the thieves can’t get it off will they decide to trash the car instead ?
 
A thief does things quickly, so longer it takes the safer you are. I had my aluminum boat taken. They cut through the fence and the like to get to it. The gate was unlocked. I put out a sign, "YOU MIGHT AS WELL COME AND GET THE MOTOR." I was waiting.

Maxw, I have to tell you my original BT7 had a white hardtop on it and I never took it off unless I need the room for my surfboard. I had the car until 1975 when I sold it to a guy in the Coast Guard in Cape May NJ. I found a hardtop for sale locally in PA last fall and decided to purchase it Upon removing the headliner I found a book of Cape May County Bridge passes and a ticket stub from a drive in under there. I hardly ever saw another Healey in 10 years in Cape May let alone one with a hardtop during my years stationed there. But I do know I used bridge passes for the Cape May system. So I think I have identified my original hardtop after 45 years. What it went through during those years I have no idea.
 
captain randy, the car with the hardtop i first bought in 1967 and sold in the late seventies. i dont remember how i got the hardtop but it was on the car when i sold it. i found the car again in 2013 in charlotte nc and was able to purchase from the last owner in minnesota. so sometimes things do work like that!
 
You could try a GPS tracker and install it on the hardtop somewhere hidden. There's tons of them out there with smart phone apps. Check amazon. I've never used one so can't say how well they work.
