Last mission for the shuttle program. Up, up and away...

Magnificent, marvelous, awesome in the truest sense.

Shuttle program essentially defined NASA for my entire life (I was born in '72). Challenger disaster was my generation's JFk moment -- I still have the exact scene in my mind of where I was when I heard the news.

The shuttle may not have done all it was designed to do (couldn't fly as frequently as they had hoped), but it sure did a lot.

PUP!!

I remember listening to Sheppard's hop and Glenn's flight on a "transistor radio" when in grade school. Watched the first moon landing as a college student. In 1972 I was a sergeant in the USAF.
I should start callin' ya "son", Drew. :jester:

Oh, waitaminnit!!! Then you'd have an Unca Mickey, too.

Yup.. I remember Challenger. I was in grade school. I'll never forget seeing those solid rocket boosters going all different directions, leaving curly trails in the sky. That was horrible.
But today was excellent. nice clean launch. I agree, the booster camera shots was neat. and the commentary from the lady astronaut on the channel I was watching was really good to.

trivia. Eileen Collins, the first female shuttle captain, is from Elmira. Right here in my backyard.

Now that the shuttle program is almost over maybe we can finally do something beyond low earth orbit. The space program's been stagnant for to long.

I'm right there with ya doc. Listened to Mercury and Gemini on my transistor radio. Cut freshman college classes at UT and drove to the cape, camped on the beach and watched the Apollo lift off.... it was amazing!
Did my college term paper on the shuttle program before it was a reality.
I'm feeling old :yesnod:

edit: .....OK, I'm over it :jester:

Nothing wrong with an Unca Mikey. Every kid needs a crazy uncle to lead them a bit astray. I'm doing my best with my nieces.

Now the Discovery Science channel is running "When We Left Earth" series and follow-up with shuttle programs.

Humans. Amazing species.
