There were several men who bore the title "President" before the Constitution was ratified. None of them had executive powers as Washington did. Washington was the first who was actually the President and chief executive under the Constitution. Am I close?(trick question ...)

ding ding ding! Right on the nose! Washington was the first president of the US under the constitution of 1788. But ... John Hanson was the first (of eight in total) President of the United States in Congress Assembled, under the Articles of Confederation. No real power, but he had a nice desk.
