The World Wide Web !

Conceived in a paper written on March 12, 1989 at CERN, the WWW idea turns 25 today.

Concepts in Berners-Lee's paper:

Note he called it the "Mesh" - didn't come up with "World Wide Web" until 1990.

The internet itself has been around much longer than 25 years, but the "Mesh" was the idea for organizing large amounts of non-linear hypertext information without using hierarchies, trees, keywords. Similar to Apple's old single-user Hypercard app, but allowing the linking and searching by multiple computers.

Hum, credits just came up for "Underground: The Julian Assange Story" on Netflix as I read your post.

Mosaic!!

Mosaic? way too modern. Ever use the *earlier* browser, actually called "WorldWideWeb"?

Wow - I remember when I first started the networking at UConn, showing faculty the new-fangled ways to telnet, gopher, and ftp.

Actually just last week I taught a guy in NY how to FTP a big file, when his fancy-dancy graphical email app "balked".

(I really feel ancient now ...)

I was late to the party, Tom. Had no *nix system then. And the time it took to ~successfully~ download Mosaic durn-near had me in tears.

ARPA-NET! Oct 1969.

At the time, I was in college and driving a pathetic TR3

My brother was just at the ARPA energy conference in DC last week.

I did my first networking ~'81 via an audio-modem set up to recieve a telephone handset. We did our data entry with teletypes (I was verifying Fortran programs used with NC machining code).
