Hand break - broke

Just went for a short drive and parked on a small hill. Bulled the hand break and it didn't catch. Lever went all the way back. It still has that ratchet sound. I haven't looked yet but I guessing a clevis pin at the front end of the cable? Anyone had this experience?

Never had that happen but lets hope that all it is a failed clevis pin. I have seen them chewed into pretty bad.--Keoke
 
Well, the cable broke at the front where it attaches to the handle. This is turning into a big job as everything is frozen and no room to get tools in.
 
Well TH: I was hoping that was not the issue. But I think you can drop that entire front cable assy under the car from inside the cockpit.Under the carpet or apiece of vinyl behind the brake lever are two screws if you remove them I think the back half of the break assy with the clevis will fall down. You can then install a new cable hook it back up at the front then fit it to the rear. You might need another pair of hands
to make it easier. But I usually work alone and have done that.--Fwiw-Keoke
 
I can't say I've ever heard of an E brake cable breaking. It's a pretty stiff cable. As Keoke says you can easily remove the whole assy by first removing the clevis pin at the rear of the car, then remove the two screws Keoke mentions. You should be able to work the whole assy out from the opening inside the car. Check the parts you need from Moss or other dist. and you're back in business.
 
Keoke, the cost of the parts don't equal the cost of my wife's manicure. I'll try it may self. I had to buy a bf screw drive from Sears to try to loosen one of those big screws. One came out easy. The other has been tough. I've used a lot of solvent and bought a $13.00 Craftsman screw driver as these screws are not available and I will try again tomorrow.
Johnny, it is a very large cable. But it is 47 years old. It may have actually just come out of the fitting. I cannot tell yet until I get it out. I am even having trouble removing the clevis pin from the back end. I am planning to use a C clamp with a large nut over the flat end of the clevis pin to get it to move. I've been saturating it with solvent too.

The screw requires a Pozidrive screwdriver, for an accurate fit.

I swapped out my handbrake for my rechromed original during recent transmission work. Not sure if it would be worth it to you to remove the trans for that extra bit of room :wink:

Pozidrive? Really? The screws on my car require a flat blade almost 1/2 inch wide. The mother of all screw drivers from Sears worked. It has a place to apply a wrench for more torque which was needed.
