Seems it WAS a bad connection to the starter. Said it's not broken, but will need re-wired. When he comes back from his fishing trip to Texas. But he fadiddled with it and she starts.

So I gave him back the keys to his boat.
 
Congrats! I spent all winter with my B not starting thanks to some mucking around with the valve clearances at Thanksgiving. It was a huge relief when I finally got it running a few weeks ago. Now it runs like a charm (minus that whole emissions issue and sort of screwy compression...)
