The couple who live across from us are both park rangers. They are aware of the bears' presence, but not sure if any action will be taken any time soon. The reality is that bears are fairly prevalent in this area. Saw a coyote a few weeks ago, and a neighbor said she saw a mountain lion! Not sure about that sighting...
 
I have connections with the Maryland DNR, as they are concerned about Black Bear encroachment into populated areas. Most of the time, they try to modify the human's behavior, not the bear's. If there is no food to be found, a bear will likely just move on from that spot. I'm told there are frequent forays by Black Bears into upper Montgomery County (Maryland) to the point where the DNR folks said not to report any sightings to them north of a line consisting of Routes 27 and 118. I haven't seen any yet, but have seen some evidence of bear habitation.
