Went to the NAPA store to pickup some filters. While I was getting ready to leave, one guy behind the counter looks out the front window, then turns to the other counter man and says:

<span style="font-style: italic">"oh, here comes that guy in the MG"</span>.

I turn my head to have a look and in pulls a beautiful red Austin Healey 3000.
When I went out into the parking lot I talked to the guy for a min or two and told him to make sure he tells the guys in the store that it's NOT and MG. He got a chuckle when I told him what they said.
Oh yeah, the two guys behind the counter were too young to know what British car it was!

Kid I worked with had some special edition VW Passat (GTI or some such), and was telling me how rare they were to see, and how he bought it partially to be a show car.
I deflated him a bit, in a very kind way I said, "But anyone like me who is not a VW fanatic, just sees a Passat. And I've seen 10 of those today."
I have a hard time when a specific trim package makes an otherwise mundane modern car "rare"...
Same thing I guess... to a point.Just the other way around. My experience has been that VW guys, and Honda guys are just as "rabid" about their cars as we are about ours.
 
My TR8 was "googled" while I was sitting at a stop light the other day. A couple in a car behind me were reading the bootlid and I could see them mouthing the words "Triumph" and "TR8", then the guy, he was in the passenger seat, pulled up his smart phone and started tapping away. After the light turned green and traffic allowed, they pulled into the left lane and started taking pictures with the same smart phone.

Actually I did try Mickey.... I will run into him again I'm sure and keep on him to join the asylum.

At least they knew what an MG was. I got in a darned-near argument with someone once because I needed something for my MG and he <span style="font-style: italic">insisted</span> I meant "GM" and didn't know what I was talking about. I mean to the point that he started saying "is it a Chevy, Oldsmobile, Pontiac..."

I can't completely understand <span style="font-style: italic">not</span> knowing what an MG is (I don't know what an "EVO" is so...), but to argue the point?

Mine was a "special edition" Midget because of the radio and trunk rack. Didn't have the side decals though.

Can you imagine the response from either of them if you had mis-identified a "rice rocket" Mitsubishi Evo for a Subaru WRX. "Dude, stupid old git doesn't recognize an Evo".

The sad thing is, that is why this LBC hobby will die out with us.

Had a similar experience a couple years ago. Went to the local Checker Auto, and needed something for the TR7. Counter kid asks make, and I say Triumph. He asks "who makes that" Response "Triumph" Deer in the headlights look...told him to look it up...I know it's in the system.

At least one of them didn't say to the other one: "British car....who makes that??"
 
I was driving in Albuquerque when a low-rider pulled up to my right and I saw him looking but not wanting me to know he was looking. At each red light (about 5 or 6) he would bounce up and down and generally make his presence known. Finally he couldn't stand it and said "Hey lady, what is that?" I said "Don't you know?" He sheepishly replied no and I full of confidence told him it was the protype for the new Vette. Wow, cool. That was that. Oh I didn't try to get him to join the forum.
 
When we get the "Who makes that?" after saying "It's an MG (Alfa Romeo or Lotus)" I now respond with country of origin.

As for the counter 'help' I usually look for the oldest guy there if I go into an 'unknown' store or shop. Normally we stay with the places we know and they know us.

I've also had "what does MG stand for?" Had to explain that yes, it stand for something, so does VW and BMW. I prefer to go during a weekday as the old guys typically don't work evenings or weekends any more.
