Guaranteed big mess.

Nothing is more humbling to me than trying to get a grease gun to work. I rebuilt my TR3 calipers today and spent more time trying to get the ****ed grease gun to "squirt". Of course it did "squirt" as soon as I took the end cap off. Is it just me?

Nope!!!

Happens to me nearly every single time I try to fill a grease gun. Usually because I forget about the air release valve. Or if it's been sitting for a few months, takes me forever to get it working again.

When I tell the wife I have to grease something, she says, "Go buy a new one, they aren't that expensive!" Still have to use it later anyway. Gives four letter word practice and hold backs from throwing things.

Doesn't keep *me* from throwing things ...

:iagree:

This is what works the best for me:

Clamp the end of the plunger in the bench vise, then pull the body against it with one hand while unscrewing the head with the other hand. Let the body back just a little, until there is 1/8 or 3/16 of grease protruding; then screw the head back on a few turns. Once the threads are fully engaged, release the body and finish screwing it on against the pressure from the plunger. You'll get a little grease leaking (but not much), so wipe it away with a paper towel. A half dozen strokes should get grease coming out from the coupler.

The other trick is, once you've finished using it, pull the plunger back and lock it (like you were going to refill the gun), then hang it by the plunger (or otherwise support it head-down). That avoids having the grease leak past the piston

Maybe it's just my gun, but that air bleed valve doesn't seem to accomplish much.

I still have my UK version that is filled by pulling the piston back with a chain. You can't get the cans of grease that had a plate with a hole to squirt the grease into the gun so filling is a bit messy but so far it always works.
Not too keen on the type that use tubes of grease.

Diabolical devices! You are not alone.

The worst are the pistol type. You need the strength of King Kong to pull the trigger especially if you have as I do - small hands.

Glad to hear I am not alone.

I have always hated having to refill my grease gun. It seems like it takes longer to get it loaded and working than it does to completely grease a car.

My grease gun just takes a cartridge. Easy and no mess (well, not much)

Try this
store it tip down,
i know it’s easy to lay it down or hang it from the pump area of the handle
tip down
