GT6 GT6/TR6 rocker shaft oil problems.

I was working on my TR6 which has a GT6 engine in it (That will change) and realized that the rockers are not getting oil. The car had been sitting for 18 years before I got it and though I changed the oil and filter before I started it I'm wondering if there there is a oil gallery plugged or ? and what would be the best way of clearing it or if this is a common occurance and if anyone had encountered it and what thay did for it. Short term I think I try getting an externa rocker shaft oiler from one of the big houses but I am afraid the cam shaft is not getting oil either. What to do What to do?

Hello Skikir,
you need to find out how far the oil is getting,
remove the plugs, rocker shaft assembly and crank the engine over and see if oil is coming out of the oil drilling in the head. If not then at the rear of the head is a 1\2" A.F. set screw, remove this and try again. If there is oil there the blockage is in the head and you may be able to clear down from the top to this drilling. I suspect that it is more likely to be a problem within the rocker assembly itself.
If there is no oil from this drilling you will need to remove the head and check both the block to the lower gallery and up from the head face.

Good luck,

Alec

Thanks Alec. I don't know exactly what did the trick but I did remove the set screw and blew air into it. I had air come out some of the rockers and air come out up from the bottom of the engine. ran engine and got no oil coming out of the set srew. Took off rocker assy and blew air down the gallery. cranked engine and finally got oil. Examined rockers. Whoa! there was about a 1/8" gap around the rocker shaft. Ordering new stock shaft and luckily I have enough horded lightly used rockers to build up a set for use on this beater engine for awhile untile I get around to pull the engine out of my other car.

Hello Skirir,

a handy access point, and that is the one used if you want to add an extra oil feed to the rockers.
Sounds as though the engine has been starved of oil for some time in that area, must have been noisy.

A lot of guys like to run the added oil feed line from the pressure switch up to the head. its available as a kit and takes only a few minutes to install. Boy will it ever oil then!!!I like mine cause I just couldnt get enough oil to the top end after a rebuild.(I suspect that the severe head planeing caused the oil holes to missalign badly).

I added the external oil feed line to my GT6 years ago and it made a big difference. TRF used to sell them... I assume they still do. It's a good investment.
