GT6 GT6 starter replacement?

What is the replacement starter for a GT6? I searched the site for threads on what modern starter will replace the one on my GT6. The performance of my original equipment one is (kind of a drag),I may have to send mine out for a rebuild if the price on new units are too much $$$$. Any opinions on rebuilding orig. vrs. new?

A rebuild shouldn't be more than around $100 at the most. Meanwhile, unless your engine is significantly modified from stock, a gear reduction starter isn't going to be a drastic improvement over a fully functional OE type.

What exactly seems to be the problem with your present starter?

Oh, and online, NAPA has rebuilts for around $85, and Auto Zone has them for around $45!

But Andy, they don't make that super cool "zing" noise and make cranking the engine over seem like child's play. Come on now....

Have experience with original Lucas, Mitsuba replacements and Gustufsen gear drive. The Lucas is OK, but the others are infinately better, even for the extra money.

Maybe my expectations of a forty year old starter are skewed. The engine turns over so slowly, you'd think it was a TR model.

I rather prefer the "classic" noise(s) of a Lucas starter. And Dale, I won't argue that the gear-reduction starters are quite the improvement; I'll only argue that they're probably not necessary nor worth the extra cost on a stock engine. Call me stubborn, but I've had too many Triumphs with original starters that gave no problems whatsoever (other than one or two starter pinion drive replacements) going on 40-50 years!

TR bashing aside, have you checked the bearing wear in that starter. Even an old high mileage TR6 starter with new bearings can spin pretty fast. Check grounds all the engine grounds too.

I will start with the lubing of the old unit, and see what that does for me. As always thanks for the input.
