GT6 GT6 Clutch Kit advice, as bad as the TR6 kits?

I've read plenty on the hit and miss of clutch kits available for the TR6 since i've been a part of the triumph world. since i'm in the middle of a restoration, i'm going to be replacing the original clutch with a complete kit, but the TR6 problems make me wary of a change. Do i have to look out for the same problems and what do people think about the GT6 options available?

I guess i need some people with an informed opinion on what to get and who i should buy from.

Fortunately, the clutches between GT6 and TR6 are different not only in size but in actuation; about the only thing they are are the same or similar clutch slave cylinders. Part of the "classic" problem with TR6 clutches stems from what may not have been the best and most durable bit of engineering ever to originate in Coventry, England: that being the throwout bearing mechanism. The rest of the problem nowadays seems to be in design and quality of pressure plates in particular: what is currently supplied by the OEM as a correct replacement (read: it fits, but....) is apparently nowhere near as good as it was back when the cars were new.

All that said, I always was very happy with Laycock brand clutches for the GT6, but I don't believe they are available new (although NOS bits turn up from time to time). I think the currently supplied new clutches for the GT6 are ok, though.

When I had my '67 GT6 in the 60's and 70's I could not find a clutch/pressure plate combination that would lock up under more aggressive power. I always felt they were under size for the power of the engine. Of course it did save tires and probably the tranny and rear diff! Although I did break both of them.

i still have the clutch i took off and it is an original laycock, should i go against my better judgement and keep the clutch setup, or try my luck with a vendor clutch kit?

spitbits does have a deal on a different kit then the big three, but since this is my first clutch buy for the gt6, i have no idea what is quality and what isn't.

i'll probably buy the coventry classic clutch kit from spitbits since i have an order to make from them soon.

You might call Nigel (Cosh, the owner) at SpitBits and discuss with him. He's a true LBC enthusiast and an expert on these cars. He'll give you a reliable assessment.

I installed the kit from SpitBits in my GT6, no problems. I didn't thrash my car, though, so I'm probably not a good example for folks who like to push the limits.

Let us know, and good luck!
