GT6 GT6 Chassis Help Needed...

It seems like there is always something that isn't right. I was moving the pieces of old chassis from one spot to another and noticed several captive nuts on the front crossmember. If mine was straight, I would pull dimensions off myself, but it isn't.

Was wondering if someone would shoot a pic of what attaches where and possibly dimensions. The ruined chassis wasn't wearing most of the front body pieces and none of my manuals have details of the changes for the mk3. so much for a factory manual.

just to clarify, it looks like there are two nuts on the top near the middle, a single one on the front right in the middle, and two more on the front, just in front of where the main chassis rails end. when i get my frame back from having the differential mount repaired, i plan on trying to assemble everything to figure out if i am missing any other pieces before getting too far along.
 
Hang in there, someone with a GT6 will show up.

And that $$$$ number that you show there. It's evil. Those are things that are not discussed in the daylight under any circumstances, and especially never in the dark of night. Pure evil to know of those things......they will haunt you....
 
you agree a gt6 guy will show up or that keeping track of bills is bad?

to tell you the truth, i got the car for free and have made it a learning experience, so if i go a bit over suggested retail value, i'm ok with that. now if that number gets to 10,000...that will be a bad thing and might start haunting me.

so far, the chassis is almost rolling and the engine is ready to be put together, so short of brakes (lines, possibly rear cylinders) and rebuilding my transmission (400?), that's my cost. another 2,500 for body paint and then a fortune for interior and i'll be done (or i hope i will be...).

now this frame stuff, that is haunting me. Absolutely no measurements for any of the mk3 stuff i've needed. and there is always something i've overlooked. I think i'm missing some brake stuff (holders towards the rear) on the frame too. shoulda just bought the already painted one for 500 from idaho and been done with this last year.

Is the GT6 frame different from the Spitfire? Because I have the Bently manual with frame measurements.
 
Certain things in life should NEVER be discussed - who killed JFK, where Jimmy Hoffa is buried, how old your S.O. REALLY is and ESPECIALLY the actual amount of $$$$ spent on any old car!! :laugh:

What's this "IF" stuff????

It's never IF but rather WHEN.
 
I have a GT6, and I have lots of pictures of the frame. Not sure I understand what you are looking for though. Can you post a picture of where you are looking at, and I'll see if I have a pic and some dimensions.

i went through all my catalogs and manuals and have concluded that i'm looking at captive nuts for the grill (actually the metal bracket that holds it) and some sort of lower body panel beneath the grill and bumper. i have these pieces but weren't installed.

the lower body panel is the two front outer holes and i actually can't figure out how the grill bracket attaches, although i think it's the top two holes near the center. maybe the front middle hole is for the grill too.

On my spit the grill is attached by a bracket to the top two holes in the center. The plates to either side are welded to the frame and the grill rests (unattached) on them.

The scoop is attached with bolts through the holes in front outside the bumper extensions

and screws from the back just outside the frame rails.

YMMV I haven't looked up close at a GT6.
 
great pictures. I get how the grill attaches now and even found all my pieces that attach in the front, but still don't know what attaches in that single middle front captive nut. maybe nothing.

also, it looks like all my pieces from that front area are in different states of being bent all to heck. which is why i got a new frame. might be asking you if i can borrow some misc. pieces so i can have someone make my bent pieces "straight" again.

at least i'm making some headway. got the rear differential mount fixed today for 20 bucks. think i payed more in gas for transportation.
 
I have no idea what those are, but on mine at least, they are not nuts of any kind. On my 69 GT6+ there are dimples in that location, but no holes. I checked on the back side of the frame, and there is nothing welded or attached in that location. I can tell you for sure the grill does not mount there though. The grill attaches to the hood, and has nothing to do with the frame. I can't figure out how to attach a picture, or I would. To be honest, I have no idea what those holes are, but I don't think they are stock. I will check the factory manual later tonight to see if I can find anything.

If it is the center hole in question as here:

My '73 swing-axle GT6Mk3 has a bolt through the hole but nothing attached. The PO fitted a late model spoiler to my car and told me that he had to remove the small chin spoiler as part of the installation. It is possible that the chin spoiler attached here. I have the chin spoiler tucked away, but can dig it out and take a look to get a better idea if no one else comes to the rescue. It'll be this weekend before I get into the garage. Good luck.
 
I seem to be having trouble attaching a pic...hopefully this has done it. Ypu can see the dimples in the metal. It occurs to me you may have a Spit frame there.

lol, i hate to admit it, but it is an early spitfire frame. I needed a new one since mine had crash damage, missing main rail sections, and all sorts of problems i didn't want to have under a restoration. I purchased what i assumed was a rotoflex mk3 gt6 parts car from someone who doesn't know triumphs. The frame, as you can see in the unpainted pic, looks great. I had to remove the front bonnet and radiator mounts and add my own as well as adding the rotoflex rear wishbone mounts.

now i'm sorting the rest of the additions to the frame, which are mostly captive nuts. So far i know i need two body mounts near the rear, two brake line mounts near the differential mounts, two captive nuts on top of the front crossmember for my style of grill, and two captive nuts on the front of the crossmember to mount a small body piece.

Thanks for all the help guys, although i still can't figure out what the middle captive nut on the front of the crossmember is. maybe just to bolt the wiring up?
 
I have that captive nut in the middle with nothing connected to it.
 
To close this one off, I have to state that I do NOT believe in captive nuts under any cuircumstances...all nuts should be free!!!
