So I recently ordered some Ardex TL1400 leveling compound from a local tile shop because I plan to level my bathroom concrete slab before tiling.
The leveling compound is a special order and was about $52 per 50lb bag, and I bought 5 bags for around $260 and paid for it at the time of order. Ok, but then I realized that I also needed a gallon of the P51 primer which much be put down before the leveling compound. Thinking it would just be a few bucks, I asked the guy over the phone if I could just have him add a gallon of P51 to my order and then I'd pay for that when I came to pick up everything. He said sure, and he;s email me the invoice.

I get the invoice and almost had a heart attack when I saw that 1 gallon of the P51 primer was $110!! I called Ardex's main company support line and they told me that sounded very high - normally it's around $50-60 per gallon. I found some on Amazon for $51, but the shipping is $21, so that would be less than $110, but still, $72-72 is kinda steep for 1 gallon of anything! Then, I found a place selling it for $38 per gallon on EBay, and I thought "ah ha!", I was all excited until I saw that they wanted $79 for shipping! (I'm not kidding). So far the best deal seems to be getting it from Amazon for $51 and suck it up and pay $21 for shipping!

Grumble grumble grumble!

Yikes - profit at all costs! Here's a real bargain (yeah, right) at $88/gallon:

Then there's the pesky $150 shipping charge ...

Makes your local tile shop look like a discounter.

"$72-72 is kinda steep for 1 gallon of anything!" What about a gallon of automotive paint, especially red?

Waitโ€ฆ. I thought you get FREE shipping on Amazon with a $35 order?

Elliot - I *think* the free shipping over $35 is for items sold by, or shipped by, Amazon. Doesn't include third party vendors who put their own stuff on Amazon, and ship it outside of Amazon. (Ask me how I know ...)

The Ardex P51 for $51 is sold by a third party, Global Trade & Distribution Inc., and they're probably the guys who charge the $21 for shipping.

Of course, you could get free shipping if you bought the Ardex P51 that's actually sold directly by Amazon. But Amazon prices that at $117.

ya can't win ...

Thanks. Didnโ€™t know it was sold by Amazon.
Of course youโ€™re rightโ€ฆ. You canโ€™t win

Hurry! Amazon price just went up from $117 to $122! Order a dozen and save!

(I've noticed over several years that a price will go up fast if many people look for it for a few days on Amazon. Must be an algorithm that says "Hey - that item is getting popular! Time to raise the price!")

grumble x4

Look up CamelCamelCamel. Iโ€™ve been using it for some time to snag better deals on items I donโ€™t need immediately.

I tried getting a gallon of Blaze for a Midget in PPG DCC about a year ago. It was $1600 a gallon! Yes 1 gallon, and I had to drive there and get it.
