grumble grumble - ads on videos

We've always had some ads on various video sites (YT, DailyMotion, Vimeo, etc.).

But as of Christmas, seems there's a lot more ads, and they're more frequent.

Tried various adblockers w/o success. Tried a different browser with no blockers. Videos now either give me one or two short ads before a video, and often more ads every 5 or 10 minutes, or say "Ad Blocker Detected - please disable", even if the browser has no ad block installed, or enabled.

Anyone else getting close to giving up?

Afraid it's gonna be their modus operandi from now on. At least until their next opportunity arises...

I think YouTube may have a subscription level that either eliminates or cuts down the ads. But so far I'm just going to live with it until someone comes up with a way around it.

I think Amazon recently announced that their Prime video service will now include ads.

Remember the scene in Idiocracy, where the guy is watching "the screen" while sitting on the toilet chair, overdosing on popcorn and sucking in sugary drinks?

And "the screen" is mostly ads?

Indeed they have! I can understand having movies with ads for non-Prime members, but when you're paying a premium for the Prime membership (As I am), this is a move in the wrong direction and makes the Prime membership less enticing. @NutmegCT - The Ads on YT don't bother me all that much. For one thing, it is a way for content providers / creators to get paid for their efforts. I know a guy with a photography channel and he puts a tremendous amount of work and effort into his very informative videos, so the fact that there are occasional ads that help him monetize his channel doesn't really bother me. I don't expect someone like him to put in such effort in producing useful content and not get compensated - advertising is the best way to do that. Ironically, a few of the channels I subscribe to, because they don't align with YT's ideology, have been "demonetized" by YT so that they get nothing from YT for the content they provide.

When cable TV was first being introduced where I lived at the time, one of the "selling" points was that you could get channels without commercials because you were paying up front for the content. We see how that went, and now the internet is doing the same thing. You still have to pay, but now you're paying to receive ads and on a per-megabyte metered internet connection it can run your bill up significantly. Even if the content providers and advertisers barely break even, the internet itself profits greatly.

I may be dropping Prime. Mine isn't set to renew until March, so I have time to see what I think about these new ads.

Ads, they're everywhere, everywhere. Won't be long when billboards come back, so drivers can use them for targets.

i had flash up on netflix the other night, offering a lower monthly subscription if i opt in it would not be add free,
I will keep paying the extra couple of quid to stay add free.
I agree with Basils take on you tube, the adds are not all that bad, and the money they make they pay to contributors,

We have the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam, which tracks the progress of an eagle pair and their chicks. Been watching for years. No mas due to ads.

I wonder if the video creators/publishers check to see if their "views" are declining as ads are increasing.
Yes. If they have good content, they will have millions of viewers and subscribers. YouTube decides whether content is "worthy" of monetization.
