grease job.......?

Most of us don't have a hoist or pit in our garage so doing a grease job can be cumbersome. Does anyone have any good experience using the typical "Mr Lube" kind of facility for this work?
If you are accustomed to doing it yourself, does anyone have experience with the old fashioned Tecamite grease guns or have you found a modern tool that works well?
As always, thanks for the advice.

HI Jim, I think as a general rule the "Mr Lube" type facilities can not handle the Healey it is too low and too narrow .

However, on one trip I ran into B & P service facility that had a four post lift and personnel familiar with the Healey.


Most other times you can not get a tire with a tube repaired. :laugh:


IMOP, the old fashioned Tecamite grease guns were probably never adequate and modern hand operated or air powered grease guns using a flexible hose work very well.

A good set of car stands and a jack will let you get access to all the fittings.

Best to replace the Universals with the newer prepacked type which does away with a need for special fittings to access the grease fitting type.---Fwiw--Keoke :driving:
 
The nice thing about our local "quick lube" is that they will take my used oil and give me back my container.

My modern, no name that I recall, grease gun works just fine.

I should mention that the pit type oil change facilities are great for changing your oil if they will do it .

However, they are not good at handeling the original type Healey oil filter. :frown:

Consequently, I have a spare one all ready to go on the car while they are draining the oil I switch the filter assy, dismantle the dirty one and let them clean it up and dispose of the filter.---Keoke-- :driving:

Got to agree with you there for the kingpins Keoke, but for the rest I found that the hand gun - not the push type, will work. When I was at the MOT station I got the mechanic to grease up the kingpins for me - great chap.

It is no different than a '50-60s chevy, standard grease gun and grease cartridge from a big box parts store (Pep Boys, Kragen, etc.), hydraulic jack with a 12" piece of 2X4 under frame for each of front wheels (remove wheels to make easier) fittings one at a time, passenger side tunnel opening (pull out seat cushion) for front drive shaft, put 2X4 under frame rail running side-side in back, get rear wheels just off ground to spin driveshaft and rear fitting easily accessible with only arms under car.
 
Don't forget, there are grease fittings at the very back of the rear springs, also on the pivot for the hand brake side rods and also on the hand brake cable itself. There are also zerks on the tie rod ends, steering rod ends, lower trunnions, king pins. Do it yourself and use your manual to identify ALL of the fittings.
Never trust your Healey to any of those Jiffy Lube outfits. Those clowns couldn't find a zerk fitting if it bit them on their new tattoo. "Why" (that guy in the above post) is correct. Use a standard grease gun - Healeys are no different than regular cars. When you can't seem to get the gun to get grease into the zerk, try turning the component. Sometimes the groove inside the component is not quite lined up. Sometimes the grease inside is so hard that it takes Superman to get the grease flowing. DO IT YOURSELF and then you know it will be done right and you will feel soooo good. Good Luck.
 
righto richard, If grease will not go in, most fittings ("zerk" never heard that word for them, thanks, right up there with "Dzuz") are very easy to unscrew with open end wrench and can then soak in gasoline or some such grease dissolver, even stick ice pick like sharp tool into suspension side of fitting and dig out old caked grease, screw back in--even can then line up fitting for ease of access as long as tight enough to not let grease out around threads.
