Grand Canyon

I have a few days free in Las Vegas and want to see the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. Has anyone used any of the tours available from the hotels?

Thanks
Bruce

Here's Hoover Dam tour info. From reading info from the link, all tickets can only be purchased at the dam...first come, first serve. There are a couple of different tours. So, I don't know how the hotels get involved, unless it's only for transportation.

A couple of guys from work were at a convention last year in Vegas, and just drove the rental car there. They have parking. They liked the tour, but I don't know if they took the full-blown one or the shorter tour.

I visited the Grand Canyon once in 1970...I went in on the north side. We took the mule trip down. Really great. However, isn't the canyon about 3-4 hours away from Vegas??

Don't recommend the concrete boot tour of the dam. Might be a good one to stay away from

Three years ago, I went with my oldest son on a scientific run up the Colorado to the base of the Hoover Dam. He was tracking Sucker Fish that he had implanted with radio transmitters. We were in a 20ft aluminum skiff, bristling with electronic equipment. Now, power boats are not allowed at the base of the dam, only kayaks and canoes. But my son Abe had permission to be there. It was a freezing November. Abe had hair down to his shoulders and a full, dark beard. I was shaven bald and covered with a heavy parka. We are both obviously of Arab decent. Got to the bottom of the dam and set out his radio receivers in the water. I glanced up, way up, to the top of the rock walls and spotted a guard with a very big gun looking at us through his scope! I whispered to my son that this guard had us in his scope. Abe said, "Just wave at him, dad. He is reading the numbers on my boat." He had a permit to be there. Yes, we looked like al-Qaida, I think. Thank Allah God he waved back.....

Thanks everyone for some ideas. I get to LV late Friday Nov 12 for a scuba convention which begins on Wednesday so I have a few days to do some touring.

Bruce, Take the "dam" tour! You'll be glad you did! We enjoyed it very much and found it very interesting! Buy tickets at the dam. PJ

Somehow "scuba convention" and "Las Vegas" don't quite fit together for me. :jester:

When I was there nearly 20 years ago I took the "hard hat" tour which took us through some of the tunnels and back areas that the regular tours ignored. I do not believe that they allow that anymore, but I still have my blue hard hat that I purchased for the tour.

Trade show's actual name is Diving Equipment and Marketing Association - DEMA. Held in various locations each year. Very travel oriented now. I only go to buy dive gear for my retail store.

"Where can I get some dam bait"

You are correct, they don't allow it anymore. In the hallway to the garage we have 2 blue hardhats hanging to remind us of the great tour. I was impressed.
