Grab your flak jackets

As far as I know I do. It's covered up with an Amco center console but I did speak extensively with the previous owner about the restoration of the car and he never mentioned replacing metal in the transmission tunnel. As a side note, there were nearly 90 pieces of metal replaced in the body and chassis during the resto!

He had to replace some metal & cut the top of the tunnel as the later transmission is a couple inches farther back & much lower

A later transmission can and will fit. I've owned one that was done and know a couple people that have done it, without difficulty or cutting. You might need to bang just slightly around the tunnel, but it wouldn't ever be noticable. Believe it or not, the thing fits in there. The metal "hump" that bolts on the top of the tunnel will need to be modified a bit, but those are a dime a dozen. On the engine, you'll need to put a different backplate and a different flywheel on there.

That being said, don't do it!! Go 5 speed or keep looking for an early OD.

James, we'll keep looking, because my suggestion of a cross flow head didn't go over well, and the suggestion of a 5-speed (just jokingly) went over even worse!!!

OD is the best five speed you can put into an MGB - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You got on of them laying around Tony?

you mean 6-speed.... it works in 3rd too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

With "switches" and "magic."

Unless I'm mistaken, 5-Speed for late cars, 6-Speed for early and mid year cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

oh yeah KennyP, Howard! mentioned having an "extra" or two the other night in Live Chat. You might wanna try him if Tony don't have it.

You know, Rob's correct...the late OD will work in 3rd if you're above 45mph....had forgotten about that!
