Men after my own heart! Great! Thanks for posting.

Such a great thing to acomplish without any external assistance! Wonder if they plan to publish all their photos. Wonder how NASA feels today!

I think NASA is now trying to find a manufacturer for a billion dollar beer cooler... :jester:

Neato stuff but, well aw heck. Folks have been doing balloon launches like that for ages. There were two of them over the weekend, one in Saskatoon and one in California. Ham radio clubs launch them with transmitters that relay their coordinates and altitude in real-time, along with telemetry for other things (like temperature). A group up in Tennessee does a couple a year too.

By the way - the launch in Saskatoon went over 100,000ft. They had onboard cameras and video:

Scott, I do agree that balloon launches are fairly common; however, this was accomplished for under $150, quite ingeniously, I might add....

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]this was accomplished for under $150, quite ingeniously, I might add....[/QUOTE] I know, that's my point   They've been around for years with the same balloons, same parachute, same warmers (sometimes), etc. The same basic idea and cost. The hams doing it put a few extra bucks into the projects because they stick tiny transmitters in them, but even that part can be done for $100 or less (depending on what their goal is).

Somehow nobody makes webpages that go viral about those balloons, but they're out there.

True, plus if it had been two students from the local community college instead of MIT, this wouldn't be a news story...

unless the weather balloon comes down again just outside of Roswell...

You know, when I was teaching my freshman engineering students here at County College of Morris today, I mentioned this project to them and said, <span style="font-style: italic">"Why the heck didn't *you* guys do this?!"</span>

For some reason, they all really like the beer cooler part of the story.

I have the balloons at the Armory. being in ballistic meterology, we do balloon launches a lot, no cameras though, just all the telemetry to correct the aim of the howitzers. We did a launch in Salina Kansas (met school) that went to 20000 meters alt and landed 60+ miles down range
