Well. technically I went to see his presentation. We didn't really hang out together. What happened was this; I saw an email from the International Motor Racing Research Institute in Watkins Glen advertising that they were hosting author Bert Levy (The Last Open Road) as a speaker this Saturday. They also had Bob Millstein, who owns the "Hansgen Special", a 1953 Jaguar XK120M that won the 1953 GP race in Watkins, speak about that car, it's builder, some of it's previous owners, and it's history (The Hansgen Special was on display in the lobby. DROOL!!!)
It was also the center's big fund raising day with the drawing of the winning raffle ticket for a Ferrari 308 GT that was also on display. It went to a lucky fellow in Louisiana (Keep a lookout Billy!)
But the best part of the day was that I got to go with my Internal Combustion Engine lab students. It was during their lab time, and we all decided it would be a neat end of the semester to learn a bit about automotive history. So I was getting paid to be there!!!
I think the guys really liked it. they were really getting into Burt's talk, and oohing and aahing about some of the race cars he was showing. I think I may have created a few monsters.......
If Burt Levy ever comes to an event near you, I highly recommend going to see him. He's a wealth of knowledge about racing history and the cars, and is an excellent storyteller, not to mention very funny. Imagine Mark Twain talking about Vintage racecars.
