Well. technically I went to see his presentation. We didn't really hang out together. What happened was this; I saw an email from the International Motor Racing Research Institute in Watkins Glen advertising that they were hosting author Bert Levy (The Last Open Road) as a speaker this Saturday. They also had Bob Millstein, who owns the "Hansgen Special", a 1953 Jaguar XK120M that won the 1953 GP race in Watkins, speak about that car, it's builder, some of it's previous owners, and it's history (The Hansgen Special was on display in the lobby. DROOL!!!)
It was also the center's big fund raising day with the drawing of the winning raffle ticket for a Ferrari 308 GT that was also on display. It went to a lucky fellow in Louisiana (Keep a lookout Billy!)
But the best part of the day was that I got to go with my Internal Combustion Engine lab students. It was during their lab time, and we all decided it would be a neat end of the semester to learn a bit about automotive history. So I was getting paid to be there!!!
I think the guys really liked it. they were really getting into Burt's talk, and oohing and aahing about some of the race cars he was showing. I think I may have created a few monsters.......
If Burt Levy ever comes to an event near you, I highly recommend going to see him. He's a wealth of knowledge about racing history and the cars, and is an excellent storyteller, not to mention very funny. Imagine Mark Twain talking about Vintage racecars.

Lucky you, Ben! And great that those 'students' have a terrific instructor!

I visited the IMRRI when I was in Watkins Glen,a few years ago - EVERY automotive
book that I've ever heard of,or owned, was there. If you ever get a chance to visit, don't pass
it by.
I'd love to meet Mr. Levy someday.I finally bought,& read his book (even though there-
weren't any pictures).that I bought at Autobooks-Aerobooks,in Burbank,CA (another must-
visit place).Great book!

- Doug

Doug, If you liked the first one, you have to continue the story! there are 4 more books! All of them really good! I have had the fortune to have purchased all his books directly from him in person over several years of Watkins Glen vintage weekends. He is a wonderful guy and is always ready to talk cars and racing. I enjoy his columns in Vintage Motorsport too. In my opinion he is up there with Peter Egan.

He spoke at the Spridget 50th, he was excellent!

Very cool Ben! Field trips are the best!

I did two field trips with my students last week to ~This Place~ here in NJ.

(students love to see a 6000 ton press hammer a 2500F slug of steel that weighs 2 tons.....so do I, in fact)

I'm friends with Jon McKnight, who used to be the director of IMRRI. It used to be fun to see him when we went to The Glen. Jon left a few years ago to become the marketing director of the SVRA.

Burt comes to some of our VRG events. I took this shot of him at our Jefferson 500 this year....we gave him this shirt. :friendly_wink:

I've had "Beers with Burt" up in Michigan at the UML Summer Party as well as at a couple of the BMTA annual meetings. A fun fellow with a lot of B.S. ....that's for sure!
