I bought new seals for the posts and body / windshield and received them today.

I want to take the windshield frame and glass off my MK I Midget and put it on my MK II Sprite.

Are there any "gotchas" that I don't know about yet?

Is it simply unbolting the two large screws on each side and the thing comes off, or is there something else? Are there captive nuts underneath?
 
Two each side and lift. Make sure the wipers are clear and support it so it don't fall. A helper is best. The two front ones are capture nuts and the two back ones need a open end on the inside. They are easy to reach when you open the door.

Another way to do it is to take the three screws out of each side, slightly loosen the 4 body mounting bolts to give a little bit of working slack, then slide the windscreen and frame out of the uprights. Then you can remove the uprights and put them on the other car before you slide the windshield and frame back in and tighten everything down. I find that easier, plus, you don't need a helper doing it this way. You can also buff up the uprights while you have it apart.

That's the way it's done, but I wouldn't say "that's it". :wink: It's a tough job to get that thing back on! Just a friendly word of warning, it'll be challenging.

Hee Hee, I pulled mine off a few weeks ago to replace the seals and found it surprisingly simple... Now that I have said that, I'll never get it back on next time....
 
I think it is a rule that the seals will take 2 more ounces of force to seat than the muscles in your hands and forarms can possibly generate. Try the rope trick to pull the lip of the seal over the glass.

I got my kit from VB and found the angled joints in the lower corners to be fragile, eventually separating. After the windshield was all back together, I applied multiple light layers of black windshield adhesive to the split. It made for a good fix as it looks almost perfect and completely covers the gaps.
 
I'm not replacing any rubber around the glass, just the frame to body seal and the two post seals. That should be a lot easier. (hoping)

Perhaps easier than the actual glass, however, still not easy. :wink:
 
I didn't know the side posts could be left, I may just swap out the frame & glass and leave each cars side posts alone in that case.
The posts on the Midget are slightly different than the posts on the Sprite.
I have to pull them to put the new seals under, but that's OK.
