Just got my mail. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate arrived.

Surprise - cert shows the same engine number and car number as I have now. I had thought my engine was a replacement, as the number is higher than the "+300" I often hear about. I had only sent BMIHT my commission number, so was surprised their records show the engine number that I have now.

Date of build 9 April 1959.

Car appears basically the same now as when manufactured. However, the original had whitewalls.

Was shipped from Alexandria Dock, Liverpool, aboard the vessel "Canadian Star", to Cal Sales Inc, Portland.

This is definitely cool.

All the more reason to replace my dead starter with another bullet nose.

Now about finding some whitewall tires ...

Andy - thanks for the Coker reference. I've also heard about whitewall tire "paint".

Wonder how many folks run their TRs with appropriate wide whites?

Regardless, I'm still feeling good that my car has the original engine - definitely a pleasant surprise.

Probably not many, since it's only rather recently that an appropriate size has been available in a radial tire. Bias ply tires just aren't as much "fun" to drive on these days. Personally, I love the look of the wide whites on these cars! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Mine was built 15/4/1959 so they could have been shipmates.

When I got my BHMIT cert there was no info on the shipping, perhaps adding this info to the cert is a new development?

George - when I got the certificate for my 76MGB (summer 2004) there was no shipping info on it.

You must have an Amphicar.

Sorry. You know someone would have posted it sooner or later.

I have noticed the Coker white walls before. I really fancy a set myself, although I would have to have them shipped over from the USA. I would be interested to know how the car handles on them if anyone has them fitted.

No way to say for sure. However, all else being equal, I suspect almost any new (radial) tire is going to perform better than a bias-ply tire or even a newly manufactured "replica" tire such as a Michelin X-Stop radial!

Go to "DIAMOND BACK WHITEWALLS"They are VERY cost effective.Got a set (4) 2" & a quarter (2 1/4) wides for $440.00shipped which included the "beauty bar"outter scuff edging(1/2")They are exactly like 'COKERS" They did an exclusive size for me 175/70/r13 for my 1980 Spit. Its a natural for this classic car.You can see it at my website at;...https://www.myspitfire.zoomshare.com

I got mine a while ago and people always are curious about how the cars arrived here. On this day it was going to rain, or I would have had the top down. I think you should be in attendance this year.

That's a copy of my original window sticker as well.

My car arrived with whitewalls and I only had so much cash available so I told the dealer that I didn't want them. So he took them off and gave me black-wall tires to save me some bucks. This was in May 1958 and I was buying the car brand new from one of the 4 Triumph dealers here in Montreal. So even though my TR3A heritage build record says "whitewalls", I never had them. So to me blackwall tires are original. I never lost any points in a concours because my tires are blackwalls. To me my blackwalls are original.

The only cars I see with the wide whitewalls are on cars that come to a car show inside a closed box trailer. And in a participants choice show, they always win - because people will always vote for their favorite car, this is, the red TR with the wire wheels and the whitewall tires. SO WHAT ?

Wire wheels are a definite advantage for getting votes. White walls are nice on the TR3's, but not on anything TR4 and later.

Just my humble opinion and subject to change, if the right car, color, chrome, whitewall combo drives by.
