Got good used frame. what more to do with it?
So I picked up a good condition used frame from Steve Hewitt this morning. Other than one cracked differential mount, the rest of it looks in pretty good solid shape. The trailing arm mount arms on the frame had been replaced, the whole frame stripped and repainted, etc.
While I've got the frame by itself however, are there any improvements that people would do if they were in my shoes outside of the two rear differential mounts (one of which is cracked through on this anyways)
Any extra angled supports welded into corners for stiffness? anything special? Thanks ahead of time.
I've now got the frame that will be the new base for the up-coming frame off restoration project, and figure while it's sitting there, with my TR6 still completely together, that I should do any other improvements while i've got it there.
Here's the frame, it's in pretty good shape with just a few minor problem areas from what I was able to tell.
Both of the trailing arm support bars have been re-boxed and replaced
For some reason there were holes torched in the bottom through the Tshirt, but the frame around it is perfectly solid. I'm not sure exactly what I should have done here, maybe just grind the tshirt off and replace it to cover over the holes that were torched.
The differential support on one side is fine
But the other side is cracked. Sort of wonder why it wasn't repaired when they did the trailing arm supports. In the second photo here you can see that the angle seems to be a little off on the support rod where the support is cracked too.
So the Tshirt and the differential support are the only real issues that I need to deal with on this. There are two other spots with minor problems that I'll address as well.
At the very back of the frame on one side the metal got thin and a few minor holes, in a non-load bearing section
And then in the front right next to the suspension on the left hand size a section was cut out, probably because of a frozen bolt or the like. As you can see on the other side, that spot should be easy enough to repair by welding in a new piece of plate right over the cutout.
Anyhow, that frame, for the minor issues that it has, is in far better shape than what I've got under my TR6 currently, and the major repair work has already been done. I can tell looking in the Tshirt that the whole frame was acid dipped, though it did sit for a good while after the dipping as there is a little surface rust inside the tshirt in a couple small spots, but mostly it's a black oxide / white powdery finish that is left behind by acid treatment.
